Adebayor eyes Barca switch.

Arsenal striker Emmanuel Adebayor is keen to seal a summer switch to Barcelona but the future of the Togo international remains unclear.

The 24-year-old had spoken of his desire to move to AC Milan earlier in summer but is also quoted as saying he would prefer to stay at the Emirates Stadium.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger is convinced Adebayor will still be an Arsenal player next season, but the player himself is giving out conflicting messages.

He told the News of the World: "Milan are a big club, but the fact they are not playing in the Champions League next season is less of a challenge.

"Barcelona have made a good financial offer and there is also the chance to play alongside great players.

"Yes, I am still under contract to Arsenal but it's up to the directors to satisfy my demands or I'll leave. If my good form of last season has increased my value, my employers have to take account of that.

"I have to prepare for my retirement. Even if you are not scoring fine goals and you have money, you can enjoy a happy retirement. The time for preparing for that moment is now.
"People ask if I am asking for the same salary as Henry. That is not necessarily the question.
"But I am being considered a worthy replacement for Henry while not deserving his salary. The question lies on this level."

Liverpool Keane on Robbie - Transfer Chat.

Who? - Cristiano Ronaldo - Speculation Where is he? - Manchester United Who is he linked with? - Real Madrid
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has warned Sir Alex Ferguson that he risks looking weak if he allows Cristiano Ronaldo to leave Old Trafford. The Portuguese superstar has been linked with a move to Real Madrid all summer, and although Ferguson has insisted he will stay, it seems a move is imminent. "Once you say he stays, he stays, if not, you look weak," Wenger said. "The fact is you are in a weak situation as a club. You can think that if he sulks you could play him in the reserves, but that just doesn't work. However, it is right to take a stand against Real."

Who? - Robbie Keane - Speculation Where is he? - Tottenham Hotspur Who is he linked with? - Liverpool

Liverpool are hoping to sign Robbie Keane from Tottenham Hotspur, if reports are to be believed. Rafa Benitez is understood to be readying a player-plus-cash deal involving Peter Crouch to seal the Irish striker's signature. Benitez believes Keane would fit well up-front with Fernando Torres. However, Tottenham have apparently dismissed the first approach and are keen to keep the player at White Hart Lane. Keane joined Spurs from Leeds United in 2002 and has scored over 100 goals since then. He has also played for Wolverhampton Wanderers, Coventry City and Inter Milan.

Who? - Daniel Guiza - Speculation Where is he? - Real Mallorca Who is he linked with? - Sunderland

Sunderland manager Roy Keane is understood to be targeting Spain star Daniel Guiza in this transfer window. The 27-year-old has scored twice in Euro 2008 so far, after coming off the bench against Greece and Russia. He was also joint top scorer in La Liga last season following a fantastic campaign for Real Mallorca. Keane is thought to be preparing a 10million bid for the player. Tottenham and Manchester City, along with Barcelona and Roma, are also interested. But Sunderland would be able to meet Guiza's wage of 40,000-a-week and may steal a march on their opponents by striking early.

Terim to stay as Turkey coach.

Turkey have confirmed that Faith Terim will remain as their coach until after the 2010 World Cup.

The 54-year-old former Galatasaray, Fiorentina and AC Milan coach suggested he was ready to step down and return to club management after Turkey's 3-2 semi-final defeat at the hands of Germany.

But the Turkish Football Federation have successfully persuaded Terim to remain at the helm of the national side until the conclusion of their World Cup campaign in South Africa.
"Terim is in his post and will be the head of our team in the 2010 World Cup," confirmed a brief statement.

Spain grab Euro glory - Spain 1 Germany 0 Euro 08 Final.

Spain ended their 44-year trophy drought by deservedly beating Germany 1-0 thanks to Fernando Torres' first-half strike in an entertaining Euro 2008 Final in Vienna.

Three-times winners Germany had spluttered on their way to the Final, particularly against Croatia and Turkey, and they were second-best for long periods against Luis Aragones' impressive side.

After his injury scare, Germany captain Michael Ballack started the match while for Spain, the tournament's top scorer, David Villa, missed out so Cesc Fabregas began in midfield.

Spain were nervous in the early stages with Germany settling the better and Thomas Hitzlsperger had the first effort on goal that was easily gathered by Iker Casillas.

However, when Spain did finally get into their stride they almost took the lead in the 15th minute when Andres Iniesta's cross hit Christoph Metzelder and was heading towards goal until Jens Lehmann pulled off a fine reaction save.

Eight minutes later the Spaniards went even closer to breaking the deadlock when Fabregas picked out Sergio Ramos whose cross was headed against a post by Torres with Lehmann beaten.

Spain did score the crucial first goal just after the half-hour. It seemed that Torres was chasing a lost cause but Philipp Lahm inexplicably stopped chasing the ball, allowing the striker to clip a shot over Lehmann and into the back of the unguarded net.

It was very poor defending by Lahm who has not had the best of tournaments. He should have been first to the ball and cleared the danger easily.

Germany improved at the start of the second half and Casillas did just enough to stop Ballack's tantalising cross reaching substitute Kevin Kuranyi before Bastian Schweinsteiger's drilled cross hit Miroslav Klose and deflected wide.

When Spain responded an unmarked Sergio Ramos appeared to have doubled their lead but Lehmann made a fine one-handed stop while Torsten Frings was forced to knock Iniesta's shot off the line.

With eight minutes left Marcos Senna was centimetres away from making it 2-0 after substitutes Santaigo Cazorla and Daniel Guiza had created the chance by carving the German defence open again.

Joachim Low's side failed to put any pressure on the Spain defence in the closing stages as Aragones' side fully deserved their narrow success.

Murray impressive againstHaas - Wimbledon Day 6

Andy Murray stamped his credentials as a future Wimbledon Champion by defeating Tommy Haas of Germany in 4 sets yesterday.

Haas who at one time was World number 2 only briefly threatened to give Murray a game when he won the second set but he had no answers for the young Scots all round superior game.

Murray's next opponent is the French number 8 seed Richard Gasquet who beat fellow countryman Gilles Simon also in 4 sets. The Frenchman is a dangerous opponent, but given the way Murray has played in the first week of the tournament he should hold no fears.

In the Ladies singles Venus Williams showed that she is coming into form with a straightforward win against Martinez Sanchez of Spain and the possibility of a Williams sister Final took a step nearer.

Jelena Jankovic overcame injury and the loss of the first set to beat the talented Wozniaki of Denmark but doubts over her fitness means that she may have a problem being ready in time to face her next opponent Thanasugan of Thailand.

In one of the best matches certainly of the Women's event the number 9 seed Danara Safin, sister of Marat Safin lost in 3 sets 7-5, 6-7, 8-6 to Peer of Israel. Both girls played superb tennis and it seemed at the end that the Israelis superior fitness cost Safina the match as she was clearly exhausted at the end of the game.

Who? - Carlo Cudicini - Speculation Where is he? - Chelsea Who is he linked with? - Blackburn Rovers

New Blackburn Rovers manager Paul Ince is reported to be lining up a bid for Chelsea keeper Carlo Cudicini. The Italian stopper plays second fiddle to Petr Cech at Stamford Bridge, but when he has stepped in, he has impressed. Ince has so far been coy about bringing new signings into Ewood Park, preferring instead to stablilise the existing team amid rumours Roque Santa Cruz and David Bentley will be leaving. Ince could face some stiff competition for Cudicini, however, as Juventus and Bologna are also thought to be interested.

Croatia handed fine by UEFA. - Euro 08.

The Croatian Football Federation has been fined by UEFA following the racist behaviour of their fans during their quarter-final defeat against Turkey on June 20.

Turkey won the encounter 3-1 on penalties in Vienna after a dramatic last-eight tie was taken to extra-time following a 1-1 stalemate.

But Croatia have been fined almost 12,500 euros ($19,680) for the behaviour of their supporters inside the Ernst Happel Stadion.

"Croatian fans were guilty of displaying a racist banner and showing racist conduct at the match," read a UEFA statement.

Meanwhile, UEFA president Michel Platini has thanked the players and coaches of the various teams for the positive image they have portrayed of European football.

"I would like to thank the players and the coaches because they have given a very good image of European football," he said.

"Since the start of the competition, the players have given happiness through the quality of their football.

"I'm happy the football and the national associations have given such a fine image of football, we can be proud of what has been shown throughout the world."

UEFA look to expand Championship.

The European Championship looks set to expand to 24 teams from 2016 onwards after UEFA delegates backed a proposal to increase the size of the tournament.

UEFA's executive committee will have the final say on the proposal at a further meeting in September, but the increase from the current 16 team format now seems certain to receive the green light.

"It's something UEFA have seen no real disadvantage to," said chief executive Gordon Smith.
"It will only means a few extra days of the tournament and there is no down side in terms of loss of revenue.

"The feeling in the meeting was everyone else was in favour as well."

Meanwhile, UEFA president Michel Platini has denied claims that increasing the size of the tournament will lead to a reduction in the quality on show.

"I am not worried about the quality by increasing the number of teams," he claimed earlier in the current competition.

"Countries like England, Denmark, Scotland, Ireland, Belgium, Serbia, Ukraine and Bulgaria all have the ability to participate in a European Championship.

"Would they reduce the quality of the Euro? I believe they have the quality to take part."

Freddie calls time on International career.

Sweden captain Freddie Ljungberg has announced his international retirement in order to concentrate on his club career with West Ham United.

The 31-year-old midfielder featured in all three games as Sweden failed to qualify from their Euro 2008 group.

But after entering the competition with a rib injury and struggling for fitness during his first season with the Hammers, the former Arsenal star has decided to hang up his international boots.

Ljungberg won 75 caps during a decade on the international scene.

"The simple fact is the physical strain of playing on the national team and in club football for such a long time has finally taken its toll," he admitted.

"And that is why I have decided to concentrate on playing for West Ham United and that is where my focus will be.

"I will carry on playing football at the highest level in the Premier League for several more years and I love this sport more than anything."

Aragones urges Spain to finish job - Euro 2008

Luis Aragones has urged Spain to 'finish the job' and overcome Germany in Sunday's Euro 2008 Final.

The veteran coach will end his four-year reign after the showpiece in Vienna and, after leading Spain to a first major final since their success at the 1964 European Championship, he is determined to sign off on a high.

"My team is in good form," said Aragones. "This is a very good time for us and I hope we can achieve something important.

"We are psychological strong and I think that we are going to win.

"Germany have fast, quality players, but the team that wants to lift the title will have to go out from the start with a winning mentality.

"I am delighted for Spain, for the players and then for myself to have reached this point. Now, the time has come for us to finish the job."

Meanwhile, Aragones has backed Cesc Fabregas to step up off the bench and fill the void created by David Villa's injury.

The tournament's four-goal leading scorer will miss the final with a thigh muscle strain.
"You always fear when you lose a player like Villa, but I knew Cesc could do an important job in midfield," he added.

Frings gives Germans boost - Euro 2008

Germany midfielder Torsten Frings has declared himself fit for Sunday's Euro 2008 Final against Spain.

The Werder Bremen midfielder returned for Wednesday's 3-2 semi-final victory over Turkey after missing the last-eight meeting with Croatia with a broken rib.

Frings was a half-time substitute against the Turks but believes he is ready to play a full 90 minutes against Spain in Vienna should he be required.

"Even in the game against Turkey I had to take a number of blows to my broken rib, but I didn't feel a thing," he claimed.

"I am totally ready to play again and get stuck into challenges.

"I don't know if I will be chosen but I am definitely 100 per cent ready."

Ballack doubt for Final - Euro 2008

Germany captain Michael Ballack has emerged as an injury doubt for Sunday's Euro 2008 Final against Spain.

The Chelsea midfielder sat out training on Friday with a calf injury and could miss the showpiece at Vienna's Ernst Happel Stadion.

The absence of the 31-year-old skipper would be a major blow to coach Joachim Low after his impressive form during Germany's drive to the final.

Ballack has scored twice in the tournament - against Austria in the group stage and Portugal in the quarter-finals - but is no stranger to sitting out major international occasions after missing the 2002 World Cup final against Brazil due to suspension.

Speaking after Germany's 3-2 semi-final success over Turkey on Wednesday, Ballack had revealed that he and several team-mates were running on empty after a long club season.
He said: "Our legs were a bit heavier, the team are tired, but we're happy, we're in the final and that's what counts.

"We're going to take a break for a few days and build up our strength because we'll need it."

In a Wimbledon that is fast becoming one full of surprises the only constant to be found is the form of 5 time Champion Roger Federer. The biggest shock of the day came in the Ladies single when French Open winner and top seed here Anna Ivanovic went out 6-1, 6-4 to Zheng of China.

Ivanovic who struggled to beat Dechy of France in the last round looked out of sorts again and never got into the match and looked to be suffering from the weight of expectation around here shoulders.

Serena Williams the number 6 seed and now surely one of the favourites for the Ladies event beat Amalie Maresmo in a clash of 2 former champions though it was obvious Maresmo was still suffering from the injury that has hampered her for much of this season.

The other seed to fall yesterday was last years runner up Bartoli of France who was seeded number 9 was also suffering from injury and lost in straight sets to Mattek of the USA.

"I am still on the look out for other players to boost the quality of our squad."

Villa to definately miss Final - Euro 2008

Spain striker David Villa will definitely miss the Euro 2008 final against Germany due to a thigh muscle injury picked up in the 3-0 semi-final defeat of Russia.

The tournament's four-goal top-scorer limped out of Thursday's semi-final success in the 35th minute and will play no part against Germany in Vienna.

"Villa won't be playing in the final," confirmed Spain coach Luis Aragones. "He suffered a muscle strain."

However despite the blow, the Valencia striker has vowed to remain positive as Spain look to secure their first piece of silverware since the 1964 European Championship.

Villa scored a hat-trick in Spain's opening 4-1 group stage win over Russia and was also on the mark in the 2-1 success over Sweden which booked their place in the knockout stages.

"All I want to do now is enjoy Sunday," he said. "I'm a little sad that I won't be there to take part but it's better that a team-mate who is fit plays instead of me, particularly as my injury has left me limping quite badly.

"At the start I was really upset because I knew it was going to be very difficult to play in the final if we got there.

"But after the way the team played in the second half I cheered up and now am really happy despite everything.

"This is an achievement for the whole squad and we want to take the glory on Sunday."

"The Spaniards put in an impressive performance," he told the German football federation's official website.

"They have played the whole tournament at the highest level and have been technically very good.

"They proved in impressive fashion that they were the better team against the Russians and they have a more varied game than the Portuguese.

"Their midfielders constantly change positions and keep getting forward, all of which makes them hard to work out."

The England international striker has been linked with moves to a host of the Toffees' Premier League rivals, in particular Sunderland, during the past few weeks. Wigan Athletic and Bolton Wanderers were also mentioned as possible suitors. However, Moyes is adamant the 27-year-old former Crystal Palace frontman is not heading out of the Merseyside club. Johnson has netted 22 goals for the Toffees since his arrival in an 8.6million deal two years ago. "Andy Johnson is not for sale, it is that simple," a defiant Moyes told the club's official website. But Adebayor, who has scored 46 goals in 105 appearances since his arrival at Arsenal from AS Monaco in January 2006, claims he wants to remain at the Emirates Stadium. "I am an Arsenal player and have three years left on my contract," he said. "The most important thing for me is to keep on enjoying my football. I'm staying at Arsenal." Adebayor's message directly contradicts a claim from an agent that he was '80 per cent' certain of joining the Rossoneri this summer. On Thursday, Vincenzo Morabito claimed: "Arsenal are looking for Adebayor's replacement. Until that search is over, the negotiations won't reach the final stage, but I am fairly optimistic. What are the chances of Adebayor coming to Milan? I'd say today we are between 70 and 80 per cent."

Who? - Milan Baros - Speculation Where is he? - Olympique Lyonnais Who is he linked with? - Portsmouth

Czech Republic striker Milan Baros will not be joining West Bromwich Albion ahead of their return to the Premier League, according to his current club Lyon. The 26-year-old former Liverpool striker spent the second half of last season on loan at Portsmouth after falling down the pecking order at the French club. Baros' uncertain future at Lyon had led to suggestions that Pompey and Bolton Wanderers were keen to sign him on a permanent basis, but the Baggies were believed to be at the head of the queue for his signature. However, new Lyon coach Claude Puel wants to run the rule over the striker before deciding whether to keep him at the Stade Gerland. "Milan will report back to Lyon for pre-season training on July 14 and is now likely to play a part next season," said the player's agent Pavel Paska. The former England number one, endured a frustrating spell on the Spurs bench last season, is expected to be shown the exit at White Harte Lane with boss Juande Ramos hopeful of completing a deal for PSV brazilian stopper Heurelho Gomes. It's believed that Villa boss Martin O'neil will offer the England man a lifeline after pulling the plug on a deal for loan keeper Scott Carson from Liverpool- stalling over their 10 million valuation for the player.Ironically Robinson may be poised to replace the man who ousted him from the national team for the ill-fated Euro 2008 qualifier against Croatia last November. Robinson famously fell out with manager Juande Ramos after losing his first-team place to Radek Cerny halfway through last season before being dropped by Fabio Capello and replaced by David James in the England line-up. It seems certain that Robinson who has played 175 games for Tottenham since his move from Leeds United in 2004, will leave with Villa the most likely suitors for the Carling Cup winner.

Who? - Cristiano Ronaldo - Speculation Where is he? - Manchester United Who is he linked with? - Real Madrid

Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon has claimed that his club are mere 'passive spectators' in the ongoing saga of Cristiano Ronaldo's possible exit from Manchester United. The 23-year-old Portugal ace is expected to make an announcement about his future in the next few days and Calderon insists that Real are just waiting to see what happens. He told the Madrid radio station City FM: "I suppose they think we have intervened in some way, but it's not like that and that's the truth. We know that it's something between the player and Manchester United. If the player continues to insist that he wants to come and if United will consider letting him go, then we'll ask. If the price is right and everyone's happy, then it won't turn sour. I prefer not to talk much about him because he is a United player. We are in this situation as passive spectators, but his declarations have provoked a lot of expectations. Nevertheless that is not enough, because the player belongs to United, a great club that we are friends with and we don't want to interfere. It seems to me that he has become a bit of a hot potato at United. But I don't want to talk about that because what I say could be misinterpreted."

Who? - Miguel Veloso - Speculation Where is he? - Sporting Lisbon Who is he linked with? - Arsenal

Arsenal are reported to have entered the bidding for Sporting Lisbon's Portugal international midfielder Miguel Veloso, who is also a target for AC Milan and Juventus. The highly-rated 22-year-old is almost certain to leave Sporting this summer, despite having a contract running until the summer of 2013 with his present employers. Veloso's agent, Paulo Barbosa, confirmed: "We did not have normal contact from the Arsenal board, but from a member of the technical staff at the club. At the moment there is not a formal offer yet, but it is possible that that will happen soon as Juventus and AC Milan have shown an equal interest in the player. Miguel is on holiday now. Sporting Lisbon has not commented just yet, but until a formal offer is made that is perfectly normal. As long as there is a good offer for both parties - the club and the player - then negotiations can be done for sure. It is no secret to anyone that he wants to play abroad."

Who? - Andrei Arshavin - Speculation Where is he? - Barcelona Who is he linked with? - Zenit St Petersburg

However, the player himself has suggested Barcelona would be his preferred destination. "Barcelona has made a formal proposal to Zenit for the purchase of Arshavin," Zenit's sporting director Konstantin Sarsaniya is quoted as saying. "We will only talk about this once Andrei returns to Zenit." Speaking earlier in the week, Arshavin admitted it would be a "dream" to secure a move to the Camp Nou. "Barcelona are my dream. I never thought I would have a genuine chance to play for the club," he said. "I have supported Barcelona all my life, let's see how the situation unfolds."

Who? - Emmanuel Adebayor - Speculation Where is he? - Arsenal Who is he linked with? - AC Milan

Arsenal striker Emmanuel Adebayor is '80 per cent' certain of joining AC Milan, according to the player's agent. The Togo international has been linked with a 20million move to the Rossoneri after scoring 46 goals in 105 appearances since his arrival at Arsenal in January 2006. The Gunners are adamant the 24-year-old will not be following former team-mate Mathieu Flamini to the San Siro this summer and earlier this month an angry Arsene Wenger sent a fax to Milan telling them Adebayor was not for sale. However, Adebayor's agent, Vincenzo Morabito, has contradicted that stance by suggesting Wenger is already seeking a replacement. "Arsenal are looking for Adebayor's replacement. Until that search is over, the negotiations won't reach the final stage, but I am fairly optimistic," he said. "What are the chances of Adebayor coming to Milan? I'd say today we are between 70 and 80 per cent."

Who? - Diego Milito - Speculation Where is he? - Real Zaragoza Who is he linked with? - Manchester City

Manchester City have reportedly tabled a bid for Real Zaragoza striker Diego Milito. The Argentina international is one of several high-profile players expected to leave Zaragoza this summer following their relegation from Spain's top-flight. The 29-year-old forward has been prolific for the Blanquillos after scoring 51 times in just over 100 appearances following his arrival from Genoa in 2005. "Manchester City are the only club to have placed a bid with my client's employers," Milito's agent Adrian Faija is quoted as saying. Milito finished runner-up to Ruud van Nistelrooy in the race to be the top-scorer in La Liga during the 2006/07 campaign. His form led to speculation that Barcelona and Valencia were keen to lure him away from Zaragoza. However, the powerful striker remained at La Romareda where he was made captain for the last campaign.

Who? - Abdoulaye Meite and Seyi George Olofinjana - Speculation Where is he? - Bolton Wanderers and Wolves Who is he linked with? - Hull City

Hull City are on the trail of Bolton Wanderers defender Abdoulaye Meite and Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Seyi George Olofinjana as manager Phil Brown looks to build a competitive Premier League squad. Meite, 27, has been out of favour at the Reebok Stadium after reportedly refusing to reappear for the second half of last season's 2-0 defeat to Manchester United at Old Trafford in March. The Ivory Coast defender was dropped to the reserves after angering manager Gary Megson. Meanwhile, Nigeria international Olofinjana has been linked with several top-flight sides after starring for the Championship outfit last season. However, Brown has admitted that both potential deals are far from being concluded at the moment. "Meite is somebody we are interested in but suddenly the price has gone from a minimal transfer to 3million and we're not interested at that price," he said. "Olofinjana could play in the Premier League and I would be interested. But there's been no contact and to say any more would be disrespectful as I've not talked to (Wolves boss) Mick McCarthy."

Who? - James Harper - Quite likely Where is he? - Reading Who is he linked with? - Middlesbrough

Middlesbrough's hopes of landing James Harper have been boosted after Reading manager Steve Coppell admitted he may struggle to keep hold of the midfielder. Harper, 27, was one of few positives for the Royals last season as he scored six goals from midfield during 42 appearances in a season that ended in relegation. Harper is one of several players linked with summer departures from the Madejski Stadium and Boro are believed to be at the head of the race to sign the former Arsenal trainee in a 3million deal. But despite Harper not asking for a transfer, Coppell has admitted he may struggle to keep certain players at the club following their return to the Championship. "We don't want to lose players, but I fully accept we are going to because we have players who are desirable," he said. "You look at Ronaldo at Manchester United - no-one is immune to being vulnerable to so-called perceived bigger and better clubs. We are in a vulnerable position and we have to be flexible."

Who? - David Bentley - Speculation Where is he? - Blackburn Rovers Who is he linked with? - Tottenham Hotspur

Spurs will offer Aaron Lennon in a 15million player-plus-cash deal to land England star David Bentley. The North London club appear to lead the chase with the lure of European football next season as the winger looks to strengthen his England claim. Manchester City are also reportedly interested, but it's strongly believed that potential swop deal including Lennon, 21, would prove too tempting for Blackburn to turn down. Former Leeds winger Lennon,21,who is rated by Spurs boss Juande Ramos, has won nine England caps and was once regarded as one of the country's top prospects.Spurs have been reluctant to match Blackburn's asking price but Spurs chairman Daniel Levy and sporting director Damien Comolli are hoping a player-plus-cash deal will be accepted. Aston Villa boss Martin O'Neill has had a 15m bid for Bentley rejected. Spurs are also close to doing a 6m deal for PSV Eindhoven's giant Brazilian keeper Heurelho Gomes.Ramos is also interested in Sevilla pair, winger Diego Capel and Brazilian midfielder Adriano - who is a target for Inter Milan.

Who? - Stelios Giannakopoulos - Quite likely Where is he? - Bolton Wanderers Who is he linked with? - Hull City

Hull City boss Phil Brown is poised to make an approach for Bolton Wasnderers midfielder Stelios Gianakopoulos. The Greece international who has not been offered a new contract at the Reebok Stadium is available on a free transfer and it's believed the player has already expressed a desire to remain in the top flight next season.A move to the KC Stadium would see the 33-year- old reunited with former Trotters coach Brown with the tigers chief eager to add experience to the squad. "I will be talking to his agent when I get back (from holiday) and I will be talking to the player himself soon," Brown told the Hull Daily Mail. "He has gone back to Greece with his family, who I know very well, and he has only just finished his season with Greece at Euro 2008. "I'm sure there will be an opportunity to speak to him in the near future."

Lippi returns to Italian Helm.

The Italian Football Federation have confirmed that Marcello Lippi has returned to coach the national team, following the sacking of Roberto Donadoni.

Donadoni has paid the price for the Azzurri failing to make it past the quarter-finals at Euro 2008, with Lippi returning to the post two years after he led Italy to World Cup glory in Germany.

For his part, Donadoni said he was proud of his time in charge, which ended with a penalty shootout loss to Spain.

He said after learning of the decision to send him packing: "I'm disappointed that a penalty kick can cause this situation.

"But over the last two years my Italy side have done something good and one game can't change that. It was a stupendous experience and I would do it all again immediately.

"In fact, I would do everything again because I have a clear conscience for everything I have done. "There hasn't been any financial compensation, but that doesn't interest me. Money is useful for everyone, but it was never a problem for me.

"On the day I picked the squad, when president Giancarlo Abete mentioned the possibility of compensation I said that there was no need."

German coach expresses relief at Final spot - Euro 08.

Germany coach Joachim Low admitted his side rode their luck to book their place in the final following a 3-2 semi-final success over Turkey.

Philip Lahm's late winner was enough to squeeze past gallant Turkey in Basel after Semih Senturk equalised Mirolav Klose's second-half strike to set up the possibility of extra-time.

Turkey had taken the lead in the match through Ugur Boral before Germany replied courtesy of Bastian Schweinsteiger.

"We weren't very good in the first half and in the second we weren't that good either, but we gritted our teeth and we wanted the victory," admitted Low.

"The Turks played really well, they chased after the ball a lot and maybe they ran after it very well and we had heavy legs and the heat didn't do us any favours.

"It is an immense happiness that I am feeling. "That was a battle in which we have expended a lot of energy."

Spain power into Final - Euro 2008 SF Spain 3 Russia 0

Spain powered into the final of Euro 2008 with a 3-0 semi-final demolition of a lacklustre Russia in a rain-soaked Vienna.

Spain were unchanged from the side who needed penalties to see off Italy in the quarter-finals, while Russia coach Guus Hiddink was forced into one change, with Vassily Berezutsky stepping in for the suspended Denis Kolodin in central defence.

The opening minutes of the game saw few clear openings, although Russia goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev made a smart block from close range after David Villa had played in Fernando Torres.
Villa then forced a relatively comfortable save from Akinfeev with a long-range drive, as the rain began to pour down in Vienna.

Just before the half-hour mark Xavi lofted a fine pass through to Andres Iniesta, but he completely missed his kick inside the area and the opportunity went begging.

Soon after Roman Pavlyuchenko found just enough space on the edge of the area to curl a shot goalwards, but it flew a matter of inches wide of goal.

Spain were then forced to replace the injured Villa, before Pavlyuchenko took down a high ball into the area, but failed to hit the target with a rushed left-foot shot.

Five minutes into the second half Spain hit the front as Iniesta found space on the left and fired the ball across the face of goal and Xavi arrived on cue to divert the ball through the legs of the stranded Akinfeev.

Torres lifted a shot high over the crossbar when well placed soon after, as Spain went in search of a killer second goal.

Torres wasted another opening just past the hour mark and after subs Cesc Fabregas and Xabi Alonso had tested Akinfeev with long-range efforts, Spain did grab the all-important second goal.
The outstanding Fabregas lifted a ball over the Russian defence and fellow sub Dani Guiza ran through to lift a cute finish over the advancing Akinfeev.

Eight minutes from time it was 3-0, as Iniesta's pass released Fabregas and he weighted a fine ball across the area to David Silva, who had time and space to net with a low, left-foot shot.

Russia's only effort on target came two minutes from the end as Dmitry Sychev's header was superbly blocked by Iker Casillas, as Spain swept into the final, where they will face Germany.

Donadoni axed by Italy. - Euro 2008 News.

A statement confirmed: "The Italian Football Federation would like to confirm that Donadoni's contract has been allowed to expire.

"President Giancarlo Abete met Donadoni in the FIGC's offices and during the course of the meeting they reviewed the work done over the last two years and the European Championships.

"While stressing his sincere respect for Donadoni on a personal level and appreciating his hard work and professional conduct, the president informed the coach that the FIGC didn't intend to continue his contract."

Harry looks to Shore up defence.

Portsmouth manager Harry Redknapp has revealed his interest in signing left-back Nicky Shorey from Reading.

Shorey, 27, was the subject of interest from West Ham United last season, but the Royals reportedly turned down a £4million bid for his services.

However, following their relegation to the Championship, the England international has once again been linked with a move away from the Madejski Stadium and Redknapp has made his interest known.

"Shorey is a player I like," he told the Reading Evening Post. "He's a good player and a good footballer.

"We're looking for players who would give us something a bit different and he would do that.

"He would give us something different to Hermann (Hreidarsson). Having said that, Hermann did a fantastic job for us and was brilliant for me. "But we are going to need a squad and we are going to need cover.

"We are going to be playing more games than ever next season and it's going to be a lot tougher for us."

The 26-year-old currently at Paris Saint Germain has already had a taste of the Premiership with Bolton when Sam Allardyce brought him to the Reebok Stadium on a season's loan in 2003. However it looks likely that the former French international is set for a summer transfer after becoming out of favour. Mendy has been the subject of interest from Italy but Phil Brown believes the Tigers can help the player get back in the French national side where he's been capped three times.

Hiddink confident lessons learnt - Euro 2008 News.

Russia coach Guus Hiddink is confident his players have learned from their group stage mauling at the hands of Spain ahead of Thursday's semi-final second meetings of the sides.

Spain were comfortable 4-1 winners in Innsbruck back on June 10 on their way to winning Group D, but a quietly confident Hiddink is not expecting a repeat scoreline when the sides lock horns again in Vienna.

He said: "If we play as we did before we don't even have to start this game. We may as well hand over our wallets to Spain.

"We have tried, of course, to improve. The team has learnt a lot in a very short time. We hope to continue that."

Meanwhile, Hiddink has confirmed he has an injury concern over Ivan Saenko after the midfielder sat out training earlier in the week with an ankle problem.
"He's still got a little bit of a problem but we will see tomorrow if he can participate," he revealed.

Aragones denies Fenerbache job link.

Spain coach Luis Aragones has denied claims from Fenerbahce that he has agreed to become the new manager of the Turkish club.

Fenerbahce announced on Wednesday that the 69-year-old coach had agreed a provisional two-year contract to take over at the end of Euro 2008.

However, the former Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, Valencia and Mallorca coach has denied that any agreement has been reached to replace Zico at the Sukru Saracoglu for next season.

"I don't understand it because Luis hasn't signed anything with anyone," he said in the build-up to Thursday's semi-final meeting with Russia.

A previous statement from Fenerbahce read: "Our club has made a two-year preliminary contract with Luis Aragones, who is currently the technical director of the Spain national team, to be our soccer coach in the new season."

Spain set to wear "unlucky" 2nd kit - Euro 2008 news

Spain have played down the significance of being asked to wear their 'unlucky' change kit of yellow for Thursday's semi-final with Russia.

Russia have been drawn as the home team for the clash in Vienna which means they have been granted permission to wear their traditional red strip.

But despite yellow being deemed as unlucky in Spain and reports claiming that coach Luis Aragones has an aversion to the colour, the players claim they do not believe in such omens.
"As far as I'm concerned it's fine as I'm used to playing in yellow," said Villarreal midfielder Marcos Senna.

Barcelona midfielder and Spain team-mate Xavi added: "If I remember correctly we played in yellow when we beat France (in a friendly back in February) so I hope it brings us luck again."

Germany edge past brave Turks - Euro 08 Germany 3 Turkey 2

Germany rode their luck before beating a weakened Turkey side 3-2 in an action-packed semi-final in Basel.

Joachim Low's side produced a disjointed performance but won through to Sunday's Final thanks to Philipp Lahm's stoppage-time goal.

But the Turks, who have been the last-gasp heroes of this tournament having come back from the dead to beat Switzerland, Czech Republic and Croatia, were the better side virtually from the first whistle and were desperately unfortunate to lose the game.

Turkey were without four suspended players while Nihat Kahveci was injured. Germany were unchanged from the side that beat Portugal 3-2 in last week's quarter-final victory with Thomas Hitzlsberger keeping his place in the starting line-up ahead of Torsten Frings.

The Germans started the match very poorly and in the 14th minute sloppy defending allowed Colin Kazim-Richards to last a shot against the bar with Jens Lehmann beaten.

Turkey deservedly took the lead midway through the first half. Kazim-Richards' looping shot hit the bar but Boral Ugur was on hand to turn a mis-hit shot through Lehmann's legs and over the line.

However, against the run of play, Germany were level in the 26th minute when Lukas Podolski whipped in a cross and Bastian Schweinsteiger flicked a shot home.

On the half-hour in an incredibly open game, Lehmann was forced to save the unmarked Senturk Semih's looping header.

The Turks continued to dominate and Hamit Altintop's over-hit free-kick almost caught Lehmann out, the veteran keeper being forced to tip the ball over the bar for a corner.

When Germany responded Podolski found himself clean through as he beat the offside trap, but the Bayern Munich man fired over the bar.

As play swung from one end to the other Sarioglu Sabri, in acres of space, lashed a shot over Lehmann's goal.

The second half continued in a similar vein with Turkey dominating possession and Germany struggling to string two passes together.

In the 52nd minute Germany should have had a penalty when Lahm was upended in the area by Sabri but the referee, amazingly, waved play on.

The match seemed to be heading for extra-time but, with 11 minutes left, Germany took the lead when Lahm's cross was missed by Recber Rustu and Miroslav Klose had the simple task of heading the ball into the empty net.

Amazingly Turkey hit back and equalised in the 86th minute when Sabri beat Lahm and crossed for Semih at the near post to flick a shot past Lehmann.

There was more drama to come though as, with the match moving into stoppage time, Lahm beat Kazim-Richards, played a neat one-two and then blasted a shot past Rustu.

It was an incredible end to an amazing match but this time there was to be no happy outcome for the battling Turks.

Meltzelder sets eye on Final. - Euro 2008.

Germany defender Christoph Metzelder has set his sights on a dream Euro 2008 final meeting with Spain in Vienna on Sunday.

The Real Madrid star will be part of the Germany side that will take on Turkey in Wednesday's semi-final in Basel, while Spain must overcome dark horses Russia to book their own place in the showpiece 24 hours later.

"We are the two favourites," claimed Metzelder. "Spain have a very strong team with a lot of quality and Germany have many strengths as well, above all when it comes to our mentality.
"I would love to play against Spain in the final.

"First we have to beat Turkey and then hope Spain beat Russia and we can look forward to a great game.

"Spain is the place where I now live and I have a very special relationship with the country."

Ronaldinho deals City hopes a blow.

"The possibility that Ronaldinho will play in the red and black shirt next year is still there and is the same as a few months ago.

"Nothing has changed. We know that Milan like Ronaldinho and that Ronaldinho likes Milan and we will continue to work to bring the best player in the world to the best club in the world."

British men had another success yesterday when qualifier Chris Eaton beat Pasanski of Croatia and he now goes on the met Dmitri Tursanov the number 25 seed in round 2.

Britains Naomi Cavaday gave Venus Williams the defending Ladies Champion a fright in the first set of their match losing it on a tie break before the Americans power came to the fore and she won the second set 6-1.

Venus will now play Ann Keothovong in round two after the British number one recored a 3 set win over King of the USA.

Pompey fail in Crouch bid.

Liverpool have reportedly rejected a bid believed to be in the region of £9million from Portsmouth for Peter Crouch.

Pompey boss Harry Redknapp is a keen admirer of the unsettled 27-year-old, who has admitted he may look to move on from Anfield this summer in search of greater first-team opportunities.
Redknapp has previously suggested that his Liverpool counterpart Rafael Benitez is asking too much for the England international and has now seen a £9million bid rejected.

Crouch spent one season at Portsmouth six years ago under Redknapp, before moving on to Aston Villa, Southampton and then the Reds in 2005.

"I'd love to bring Crouchie back here," Redknapp told the Portsmouth News. "We are trying to do deals to bring in players and (chief executive) Peter Storrie is working on trying to get things done.

"But the fee seems a bit too high and at the end of the day it comes down to the price. "It seems like things are getting a bit too expensive.

"Crouchie is a player who is on our list, but if nothing can be done then we will just move on to the next player."

Wenger expects Arshavin to move to Premiership.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger expects coveted Russia midfielder Andrei Arshavin to move to the Premier League after Euro 2008.

The Zenit St Petersburg playmaker has taken the tournament by storm after missing the first two group matches through suspension before returning to play a key role in Russia's run to the semi-finals.

The 27-year-old was also named man-of-the-match as Zenit won last season's UEFA Cup, but has already admitted he is looking to move on to one of Europe's major leagues this summer.
But despite claiming Arshavin is likely to move to England, Wenger is not looking to add him to his ranks at the Emirates Stadium as he feels he has missed the boat in terms of the player's age.
Wenger has a pedigree of scouting young talent from across the world and breaking them slowly into the first-team at the north London club.

"I wish I'd seem him at 21 or 22," he said. "I predict he will come to the Premier League, or go to a big club in Italy. The way he plays is something very special. "He could be tempted by wanting to play in the best league, of course.

"Would you be surprised? If you ask me do I think he will be in the Premier League I would say yes because that's a prediction."

Donadoni expecting axe to fall - Italian boss set for chop.

Roberto Donadoni is expected to be axed as Italy boss later this week following his side's Euro 2008 quarter-final defeat to Spain.

Italy were beaten by the Netherlands in the group stage and were held to a draw by Romania, but still managed to qualify for the last eight of the tournament, where they were beaten in a penalty shoot-out by Spain.

La Gazzetta dello Sport has said Donadoni will be sacked on Wednesday, with veteran 2006 World Cup-winning boss Marcello Lippi tipped to succeed him.

Donadoni signed a two-year contract extension earlier this month and said after Sunday's defeat that he had no intention of resigning.

Meanwhile, the president of Italy's Olympic committee, Gianni Petrucci, has played down the chances of Lippi returning to the role, saying: "I think it's premature to be talking about the possible return of Marcello Lippi.

"Donadoni still remains the coach and I will fully support what the federation decides.
"(Italian Football Federation president) Giancarlo Abete has every right and freedom to make the choice he considers to be best.

"I don't blame anything on the national team nor on Abete. We simply have to accept that our rivals were better than us."

Turkey low on numbers for Semi Final clash - Euro 2008.

Turkey could have just 13 fit outfield players available for their semi-final against Germany after captain Belozoglu Emre joined a lengthy list of absentees with a hamstring injury.

The experienced midfielder suffered a hamstring tear during the group stages and had been rated extremely doubtful for the knockout rounds by coach Fatih Terim.

Turkey are already without goalkeeper Volkan Demirel after his two-match suspension for a red card against Czech Republic was upheld, while striker Nihat Kahveci and defender Emre Gungor have returned home with injuries.

Tuncay Sanli, Arda Turan and Emre Asik are all suspended for the last-four clash in Basel and Servet Cetin and Tumer Metin are struggling to be fit.

"With Emre, it's impossible for him to play," revealed Terim.

"Nihat is one of the best strikers in Europe, but I think we just have to look forward and accept the facts as they are.

"The players that replace the injured and suspended ones will do just as well. "We are not looking for excuses."

Austin currently plays his club football with Portmore United and will join fellow Jamaica internationals Phillips and Ricardo Fuller at the Britannia Stadium. "It's a staggered deal if we do it," manager Tony Pulis told The Sentinel. "It's all based around how well he does over here. As everyone knows, we've had him over a few times to look at him in training and he's looked a decent prospect. Benayoun is reportedly growing frustrated at the lack of games at the Anfield club and the lure of first team football with the FA Cup winners would be to great a opportunity to turn down. Beckham and Galaxy miss chance - MSL.

LA Galaxy are certainly doing much better this season than they did last year, but could look back on this weekend as a real missed opportunity. Playing Columbus Crew at home, they went 1-0 after just four minutes, doubling that lead in the second half only to see the visitors pull two goals back before Galaxy made it 3-2 and then lost that lead too with only minutes left on the clock. Even then, David Beckham had a glorious chance to grab a winner, but skied it over the bar from inside the area.

Of course, in the grand scheme of things, a 3-3 draw against one of the high-flyers in the Eastern Conference is no disaster, but the nature of the game, and the fact that Galaxy lead for much of it, is what has left a bitter taste in their mouths. Beckham admitted: "At the moment it feels like a loss. To control the game for so long and go up 2-0. We need to learn how to finish games off. I seem to say this every week, it's the consistency you know.

"We've got a lot of young players in the team. It's all about finishing teams off and holding onto leads. It just takes a bit of calmness. This team will learn from these different experiences. We've got some good young players and players who can play under pressure. At the moment, we've just lost it in a few games," he said, also admitting that he should have made it 4-3 at the end: "Sometimes they go in, others they don't. Tonight was one of those nights. Obviously I'm disappointed not to finish the game off there. Personally I felt as though the grass gave way just as I struck the ball. To hit it over so far from that distance, something must have."

Oh, THAT excuse again, eh? Luckily most of people in LA won't have heard it before, but the rest of us will remember it from the last time he spooned a shot over the bar from that kind of distance... Ruud Gullit, at least, was blaming bad fortune as well as a lack of concentration: "What was amazing to me was every bounce, every tackle went in their favor," he said. "If you see the goals they scored, the ball bounced in front of their feet and they scored a goal. It was a little unfortunate in this case."

Federer makes it 60 not out - Wimbledon 2008

Roger Fededer in search of his 6 consecutive Wimbledon title eased past his forst round opponet Dominic Hrabaty of Slovakia 6-3 6-2 6-2 and in the process record his 60th straight win on grass.

Th top seed demonstrated why he is odds on favourite to win this years Mens singles title by winning the first 11 points of the match against his game opponent and never looked to be in any danger of progressing.

In other games yesterday the biggest suprise was the defeat of David Nalbandian the number 7 seed who went out in 3 sets to Dankovic of Canada, other seeds to exit yesterday were Ivo Karlovic the number 18 seed and Michel LLodra of rance the number 32.

In the ladies singles there was one suprise with 12th seed Patti Sshynder of Switzerland exiting in 3 sets to Delacqua of Australia.

British success was again hard to find with Alex Bogdanovic lost in 4 sets to Bolelli of Italy but in the Ladies singles Elena Baltacha gave her usual gutsy performance to beat Kerber of Germany in 3 sets, she will now face China`s Jie Zheng in the second round after she put out number 30 seed Dominka Cibulkova.

Real wont break bank for Ronaldo

Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon has denied reports that he is willing to pay £80million to land Cristiano Ronaldo from Manchester United.

The Spanish giants remain in the hunt for Ronaldo despite an adamant United warning that the Portugal international winger is not for sale at any price.

That has led to suggestions that Real will shatter their own world-record transfer fee paid of almost £50million when they signed Zinedine Zidane in 2001 by offering €100million for last season's 42-goal top-scorer.

However despite coach Bernd Schuster urging the club to pay what is necessary to land the 23-year-old, Calderon has warned he will not break the bank to land any one player.

"There is no case for Ronaldo as Manchester United don't want to sell him," he said.
"And, in any case, Real Madrid will not pay 100million for any player.

"We are proud by what certain player's have said with regards to coming to Madrid, but like I said before, we respect the club's desires and in this case, Manchester United's."

Frings fit for Semi - Germany team news Euro 08

Germany midfielder Torsten Frings has been passed fit to feature in the Euro 2008 semi-final against Turkey, having recovered from a rib injury.

The 31-year-old missed the 3-2 quarter-final win over Portugal due to a fractured rib, but has returned to training with the rest of Joachim Low's squad.

Low confirmed: "I'm fortunate to be able to say that all 23 players trained today and are fit.
"Torsten trained completely normally, but with a protective bandage. He said he had no major problems.

"He will have to live with a nagging pain, but as things stand he could play, yes.
"Frings is an important player and could return but, you know, we also say you should never change a winning team.

"I haven't put my mind to the line-up just yet."

Turkey fail in Volkan appeal - Euro 2008 team news

Volkan Demirel will miss Wednesday's semi-final with Germany after Turkey failed with an appeal to overturn the goalkeeper's two-game suspension.

Volkan missed Friday's quarter-final win over Croatia after being sent off for pushing Jan Koller in stoppage time of their dramatic final Group A victory over Czech Republic.

The Turkish FA were hopeful of successfully appealing the original two-game suspension and being able to call upon the Fenerbahce goalkeeper for the last-four meeting with Germany, but number twp Rustu Recber is now set to play in Basel on Wednesday.

The news comes as a further blow to coach Fatih Terim, who could be without up to nine members of his squad for the last-four clash.

Nihat Kahveci and Emre Gungor have already been ruled out of the tournament through injury, while Servet Cetin, Tumer Metin and Emre Belozoglu are all struggling to be fit.

Meanwhile, Volkan, Sanli Tuncay, Arda Turan and Emre Asik are all suspended.

Aragones not for turning - Euro 08 News

Luis Aragones insists he has no intention of changing his mind and will definitely stand down as Spain coach even if his side win Euro 2008.

The 69-year-old guided his Spanish team to the semi-finals in Austria and Switzerland thanks to a penalty shootout success in Sunday's last eight clash against Italy.

"I would like to thank everyone for the compliments," said the veteran coach. "But the Federation and all of you know that this (his period as coach) will come to an end whatever happens at this tournament.

"All I can say is that I'm proud of the results and proud that the hard work has paid off.
"We have created a great group with a great atmosphere. But I'm not going to get involved in whether they should offer me another contract or not. It is over and that is it."

Aragones, who is expected to take charge of Turkish club Fenerbahce next season, added: "Our reputation was a little handicap but this group of players has only ever thought about the positives and not worried about our past record.

"I looked at the shootout with a lot of interest, but I don't get too emotional about these things. When we lose I don't get too down and when we win I don't let it go to my head. After all it is only football."

Nasri makes Gunners move.

France international Samir Nasri claims he has completed his transfer from Marseille to Arsenal.
Gunners boss Arsene Wenger is reported to have paid £15.8million to secure the 21-year-old's services on a four-year deal.

Nasri underwent a medical in London last week, following France's elimination from Euro 2008.
"We inform you that Samir won't be an Olympique de Marseille player next season and that he has signed a four-year contract with London club Arsenal," read a statement on Nasri's personal website.

Nasri made two substitute appearances for France, against Italy and Romania, at Euro 2008 as Les Blues failed to progress from the group stage.

The attacking midfielder has also represented France at under-16, 17, 18, 19 and 21 level. He won the 2004 Under-17 European Championship with Les Bleus, scoring the winning goal in the Final.

Nasri won his first cap for France's senior team in March 2007 in a friendly against Austria and scored his first international goal in his third appearance for the senior team in a Euro 2008 qualifier against Georgia three months later.

Adebayor still chased by Milan - Transfer News Today.

Who? - Emmanuel Adebayor - Speculation where is he? - Arsenal who is he linked with? - AC Milan

AC Milan vice-president Adriano Galliani has reiterated his club's desire to sign Arsenal's Togo international striker Emmanuel Adebayor this summer. Adebayor has been linked with a 20million move to the Rossoneri after scoring 46 goals in 105 appearances since his arrival at Arsenal in January 2006. But earlier this month an angry Gunners boss Arsene Wenger sent a fax to Milan telling them Adebayor was not for sale. Undeterred, Galliani insisted on the club's official website: "At the moment there is only one deal in motion, and that's for Adebayor. Milan remain true to their word, either Adebayor comes or we keep things as they are, with (Alberto) Paloschi. I still think that our squad as it is today is absolutely competitive enough to win the Scudetto. Everyone says it's not and I don't understand why when we have got Marco Borriello who has scored 19 goals in the Italian championship (at Genoa). We're happy with the forwards we have. We've got Paloschi who is fourth choice after (Alexandre) Pato, (Filippo) Inzaghi and Borriello. It's not like we're lacking forwards. But Adebayor has a contract, and I'm always a pessimist by nature. Look at last year when Real Madrid said Kaka was theirs. If the club don't allow you in there's nothing you can do. If the player is at the end of his contract then his wishes are important, but if not and there's a contract and the club who owns him says no, then it's no. At the moment, it's no. Does it depend on Wenger? He's the Arsenal manager, a representative of the club, and at the moment the club isn't selling. Everything depends on Arsenal, but when a club says their player is indispensable there's not a lot that can be done. Of course things could always open up but at the moment I must keep to Arsenal's official line and that is that for the moment there is no possibility of negotiating."

Who? - Ivan Rakitic - Speculation where is he? - Schalke 04 who is he linked with? - Chelsea, Liverpool

Juventus appear to head the queue in the race for Croatia's Euro 2008 startlet Ivan Rakitic despite interest from several Premier League clubs. The Croat, 20, who plays his football in the German Bundesliga for Schalke 04, has impressed in this summer's tournament and has attracted interest across the continent from a host of big clubs. The Italian outfit - who finished third in Serie A behind Inter Milan and Roma - see Rakitic as the perfect replacement for veteran Czech Republic midfielder Pavel Nedved, 35, who is expected to leave the Bianconeri at the end of next season after signing a one-year contract extension. The Italian giants may be about to wage a bidding war with Chelsea, Liverpool and Inter Milan, who have all shown an interest. While it seems likely that the gifted playmaker will be playing in Italy next term, a strong offer from one of the Premier League's big four could be too tempting to turn down with the prospects of linking up with fellow compatriots Niko Kranjcar at Portsmouth and Luka Modric, who is moving to Spurs.

Who? - Andrei Arshavin - Speculation where is he? - Zenit St Petersburg who is he linked with? - Arsenal

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has dropped a major hint that he is preparing to bid for Zenit St Petersburg's Russia playmaker Andrei Arshavin. The 27-year-old has helped his country reach the semi-finals of Euro 2008, impressing against both Sweden and the Netherlands after missing the opening two games of the tournament due to suspension. Wenger, who has been in Austria and Switzerland checking out potential signings, told the Daily Express: "The eye is always looking at who can strengthen Arsenal. You always think 'could this player play for your team?' or perhaps there is a good player you didn't know. Mainly I would say that you discovered only Russian players at this tournament, because you see them playing less. All the others you know." However, Wenger's hopes may be in vain, with Russian Football Federation president, Vitaly Butko, saying that Arshavin has his heart set on a move to Barcelona. He told the Spanish media: "Andrei has a dream to play for Barcelona. It is, together with the Russian national team, his favourite team. He could easily play and show all his quality at Barcelona. Andrei doesn't have less quality than players like Deco."

Who? - Pablo Aimar - Speculation where is he? - Real Zaragoza who is he linked with? - Newcastle United

The agent of Real Zaragoza's Argentinian playmaker Pablo Aimar has claimed that Newcastle United are tracking his client. The 28-year-old is all but certain to leave Zaragoza following their relegation from the Primera Liga, with a number of clubs in Spain also monitoring the situation. Aimar's agent, Gustavo Muscardi, told The Sunday Sun: "Newcastle have asked about Aimar's situation, that is certain. There has still not been any formal offer for us and Zaragoza to study, but the Premier League would be perfect for him and I want to speak with Newcastle to take things forward." Meanwhile, the Magpies are being linked with a move to try and sign England international winger Aaron Lennon. The 21-year-old has been at White Hart Lane for three seasons, but has been linked with an exit from Spurs as head coach Juande Ramos bids to reshape his squad.

Premiership interests Ronaldinho.

Barcelona's Brazilian superstar Ronaldinho has admitted that he would love the opportunity to play in England next season.

The 28-year-old has been told that he can leave Barca this summer, with Manchester City and Chelsea believed to be leading the chase for his signature.

Ronaldinho told Globo TV: "Every player would love to play in such a competitive championship like the English league. "I'm happy because almost all the teams want me to play for them."

Meanwhile, the Brazilian ace has admitted that last season was a difficult one at the Camp Nou, with the Catalan giants failing to challenge for any silverware.
He added: "When a lot of problems come together, the whole team is not well and players find it difficult to shine.

"I'm as upset as my team-mates for not playing well. The lack of titles let us down even more.
"Now I have recovered. Everything is perfect and I've started a new stage in my rehabilitation.

"I want to profit from these holidays to return as soon as possible to achieve my dreams of becoming the world's best player and playing in the world's best team."

Ince suceeds Hughes at Blackburn.

Paul Ince has been confirmed as the new manager of Blackburn Rovers on a three-year contract.
The former Manchester United, Liverpool, Internazionale and England midfielder was believed to be the frontrunner to replace Mark Hughes in the Ewood Park hot-seat following the Welshman's decision to join Manchester City earlier this month.

Ince plus former Bolton Wanderers and Newcastle United manager Sam Allardyce, ex-England head coach Steve McClaren and former Getafe boss Michael Laudrup had all been linked with the post.

Ince though has been selected to take the reins after deciding to end his one-year stay at MK Dons.

The 40-year-old led the Dons to the League Two title and success in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy last season after joining the club following one campaign with Macclesfield Town.
MK Dons chairman Pete Winkleman had vowed to do all he could to keep the 'the hottest young manager in English football' at his club and had previously rejected an approach from Leicester City to talk to Ince.

However, he has now agreed to take over at Blackburn ahead of the new Premier League season.

"Blackburn Rovers can today (Sunday) announce that Paul Ince has been appointed the new manager of the football club," read a brief statement on the club's official website.
"Ince has signed a three-year contract. A press conference will be held at Ewood Park midday on Tuesday."

Ince had previously expressed a desire to talk to Blackburn, saying last week: "It is nice when you are being talked about by Premier League clubs. It shows I've done an okay job in my two years as a manager, which I'm pleased about.

"Blackburn are a great club, with great traditions. They're a family club and Mark Hughes did a fantastic job there, so we will see."

Tevez next for Man Utd exit? - more from the rumour mill.

Who? - Carlos Tevez - Speculation Where is he? - Manchester United Who is he linked with? - The exit door

Manchester United could risk losing Carlos Tevez, if reports are to be believed. The Argentina striker is only at Old Trafford on a two-year loan and is apparently unhappy that the club have not yet attempted to make the move permanent. United have already spent 10million to secure the loan, but must hand over another 20million for a permanent signing. A source tells the News of the World: "Carlos is in a quandary. He loves United but cannot afford to let his current arrangement continue for too long. Unless there is something on the table by the end of the year he will have to look at alternatives as his future will be so uncertain."

Who? - Aleksandr Hleb - Speculation Where is he? - Arsenal Who is he linked with? - Wolfsburg

German side Wolfsburg are the latest club to show an interest in Arsenal midfielder Aleksandr Hleb. Barcelona and Bayern Munich have both been linked with the Belarus international, who ha spoken since the end of last season of his desire to leave the Gunners this summer. Wolfsburg are managed by Hleb's former coach from his Stuttgart days, Felix Magath, who has already snapped up Palermo duo Cristian Zaccardo and Andrea Barzagli this summer. "Alexander Hleb is a very interesting player," Magath told the Wolfsburger Nachrichten newspaper. "He came to me at Stuttgart and became a regular first-team player there." Wolfsburg will be playing in the UEFA Cup in the 2008-09 campaign.

Who? - Aaron Lennon - Speculation Where is he? - Tottenham Hotspur Who is he linked with? - Newcastle United

Newcastle United manager Kevin Keegan is reportedly on the verge of offering 6million for Tottenham winger Aaron Lennon. The 21-year-old has struggled to find regular first-team football under Juande Ramos and Keegan could be ready to pounce. "Keegan is convinced he can capture Aaron Lennon and revitalise his career," a source tells The News of the World. "He is lightning fast with great skill and likes to bomb forward down the flanks. That is the sort of player that Kevin Keegan loves and the boss is sure that he can get the very best out of Lennon again."

Germany boss was at all time Low after Croatia loss.

Germany coach Joachim Low has revealed that he came close to quitting when his side were beaten by Croatia in the group stages of Euro 2008.

However, just over one week after that 2-1 defeat, Low's side now face a semi-final against Turkey after beating Austria and Portugal.

"Obviously I had these thoughts (of resigning)," Low told the Welt am Sonntag newspaper. But I tried to turn them into positives and don't let these thoughts get me down. "I try and give the team an air of optimism. "We would have had to sit down and considered how the atmosphere was and if it was worth (continuing).

"I cannot say what would have happened. Probably a lot would have collapsed around us.
"After winning two or three games, the euphoria is huge and they (Turkey) are extremely convinced in their ability.

"They have been an uncomfortable opponent throughout this tournament and have some technically strong players.

"Turks have a remarkable mentality, are self-confident and can always strike back."

Donadoni future unclear.

Italy coach Roberto Donadoni faces an uncertain future in charge of the national team, following their exit from the European Championships at the hands of Spain.

Donadoni recently penned a two-year contract extension to remain in charge of the Azzurri until the 2010 World Cup, but his position has now been called into question by the failure to progress past the quarter-finals at Euro 2008.

Italian Football Federation president, Giancarlo Abete, said: "Over the next few days we will reflect and make a decision about this. It doesn't make any sense to make a decision in the heat of the moment.

"Naturally we will all reflect together. I already have a meeting set up with Donadoni to analyse the European Championships.

"Now is the time for disappointment and unity. Afterwards we will discuss the situation, as we did before the game. This is not the time to talk about contracts.

"The squad did well and remained united, gave their heart and soul for this competition."
Donadoni had said after the penalty shootout loss to Spain: "I live day by day, moment by moment.

"It's been an exhilarating experience, an exciting experience and a productive experience in terms of growth.

"We've done everything we could do. I'm happy with how we've worked."

Fabregas spot on for Spain - Euro 08 QF Spain 0 Italy 0 (aet Spain 4-2 on pens).

Cesc Fabregas held his nerve to score the decisive penalty as Spain overcame Italy on spot-kicks to set-up a semi-final meeting with Russia.

The composed Arsenal midfielder sent Gianluigi Buffon the wrong way from the spot to confirms Spain's progress by the narrowest of margins after a disappointing quarter-final in Vienna had ended goalless after extra-time.

Luis Aragones' side will now face Russia in Vienna on Thursday, but they will need to significantly improve after a below-par showing in a game where both they and Italy failed to show much attacking flair and endeavour.

Spain bossed possession for large portions of the game against a defensively-minded Italy and clear-cut chances were at a premium throughout a contest that seemed destined for extra-time following a cagey opening.

David Villa briefly threatened when he tested Buffon with a 30-yard free-kick which he drilled under the jumping wall on 25 minutes.

Italy's Luca Toni wasted the best opening of the first half when he failed to make enough contact with a tantalising Antonio Cassano cross on 37 minutes and the out-of-touch striker saw his feeble header deflect away off the unwitting Carlos Marchena.

At the other end, David Silva was just inches away from sneaking a low shot from the edge of the penalty area inside the far post after cutting in from the right-hand touchline.

The second half was a similarly tense affair and neither side looked capable of breaking down the opposition's tightly-packed defence.

Spain again enjoyed more possession but Iker Casillas was called upon to deny Mauro Camoranesi with his legs on the hour-mark.

The best chances of the match came in surprise circumstances on 81 minutes when the usually reliable Buffon spilled a thunderous low strike from Marcos Senna onto the foot of his post before gathering the ball at the second attempt.

Extra-time briefly brought fresh attacking impetus and both sides had chances as Silva drilled a low shot inches wide of the upright from the edge of the penalty area and Casillas was called upon to tip Antonio Di Natale's instant header from a near post cross over the top.

But the penalty shoot-out which had seemed inevitable from the opening moments ensued and Daniele De Rossi and Di Natale both saw their spot-kicks clawed away by the impressive Casillas.

Spain's Daniel Guiza also saw his effort repelled by Buffon, but Fabregas calmly stroked home his spot-kick to begin scenes of jubilation among the Spain players.

Kingsgate Native lands Golden Jubilee Stakes - Royal Ascot Day 5.

Kingsgate Native trained by Jim Best and ridden by Seb Sanders was a suprise winner of the Golden Jubilee Stakes on the final day of Royal Ascot.

In winning the event the horse become the first British trained Group One winner of the meeting.

The 33/1 shot came through well to beat War Artist and Sir Gerry with favourite Takeover Target in fourth. Followers of the horse would have been suprised at the generous price on the winner given the fact that he had won the Nunthorpe Stakes last year, which in itself is a quality event.

Supporters of Maidstone based trainer best would of left Royal Ascot happy this year as he also trained 100/1 shot Flashmans Papers on the first day of the meeting and prove that the small yards can still compete against the giants of Ballydoyle and Godolphin.

Bolton close in on record signing.

Bolton Wanderers chairman Phil Gartside has revealed that the Trotters are close to completing the club record signing of a new striker.

The current record fee paid by Wanderers was £8million for Nicolas Anelka in 2006, but Gartside is ready to sanction an even bigger deal in a bid to avoid another relegation scrap.
He told the Bolton News: "We intend on strengthening the team this summer with some serious purchases.

"We've already put one to bed last week and we intend on putting the other, a striker, to bed within a week to ten days, which would be a club record transfer fee."

St Etienne's France striker Bafetimbi Gomis and Sweden forward Johan Elmander of Toulouse have both been linked with Bolton in recent weeks.

Meanwhile, Gartside has rejected talk of goalkeeper Ali Al Habsi leaving the club this summer by buying out the last year of his current contract.

He added: "In order to buy out the remaining year of his contract he would have had to have served the club prior notice of his intentions within 14 days of the last match of the season.

"There has been no notice served in that time-frame and no indication that Ali wants a move."

Arshavin looks for Zenit exit.

Zenit St Petersburg and Russia playmaker Andrei Arshavin has confirmed that he wants to leave this summer, a move that will alert a number of Premier League clubs.

The 27-year-old is reportedly being tracked by several clubs across Europe, with Arsenal and Everton rumoured to be monitoring the situation.

Zenit coach Dick Advocaat confirmed: "Andrei has told us that he wishes to change clubs.
"At present, in the way of offers, it is quiet, but the situation may well change after his game against Holland for the national side."

Meanwhile, Brazilian club Portuguesa claim to have rejected an offer from the Gunners for striker Diogo.

Club director Andre Heleno told the Daily Star: "We have refused an offer from Arsenal, because it was too low.

"Up to now the biggest offer has come from Italy, which was £9million, but we will only start to think about selling
