Spain continue Summer of success - Olympic Day 1 News
Spain continued it`s remarkable Summer of Sporting success when Samuel Sanchez gained Spain`s first medal of any kind in this event by winning the Men's Road Race event.
The 245 kilometer race was gruelling and only 97 of the 140 plus starters finished the event wit all of Britain`s competitors failing to compete in the extremely humid conditions.
The silver went to David Rebellin of France with bronze going to Fabian Cancellara of Switzerland.
The first Gold medal of the 2008 Olympics was won on the shooting range when Katerina Emons of the Czech Republic won the Women`s 10 meter air rifle 3 position event from Lioubov Galkina of Russia and Snjezana Pejcic.
At the end of the first day with only 7 gold medals up for grabs host nation China topped the medal table with 2 golds, the first in women`s weightlifting and the other in the Men`s 10 meter air pistol event.
