Cooke claims first gold for Team GB - Olympics review.

25 year old Rebecca Cooke from Wales claimed Team GB`s first gold medal of this Summers Games when she won the Women`s Road Race in appalling weather conditions yesterday.

Rain showers turned the event into a lottery and there were several crashes as the wet conditions made the surface treacherous in the 126 kilometer race, however Cooke who finished 5th in the same race in Athens in 2004 was in no mood to be denied.

In the final dash to the line it seemed the Welsh girl may have lost her chance as she seemed to drop of the back of the leading 4 or 5 riders, whoever she caught her second wind and stormed to the front with about 100 meters to go and held of the challenge of Johansson of Sweden and Guerzo of Italy.

Britain also struck gold in the pool in the early hours of this morning when Rebecca Adlington won the women`s 400 meter freestyle with a late burst to deprive favourite Katie Hoff of the USA to add to the success Jo Jackson came through to give Britain an unexpected bronze.

Britain`s Women`s Archery team were also close to a medal yesterday but however lost out to France in the Bronze medal shoot off after being beaten by China in their Semi Final.
