Open at Birkdale opens with storms- Bitish Open Day 1

The British Open started yesterday amid wet and windy conditions at the Royal Birkdale course.

Though the conditions improved slightly during the day the players were buffeted and battered during their rounds, as a combination of high wind and rain made low scoring impossible.

With Tiger Woods recovering from surgery this has been billed as the most open championship in years, and after day one only a few shots separated the top 20 or so players.

Top of the leader board at the end of play yesterday were Graeme McDowell winner of last weeks Scottish Open, Australian Robert Appleby and Rocky Mediate who took Tiger to a play off in last months US Open.

They all carded a 1 under par 69 to head Greg Norman, Adam Scott and Bart Bryant by one shot going into today's 2nd round.

My 2 fancies for the event, Sergio Garcia and and Miguel-Angel Jimenez are 3 shots back and well placed.
