Portsmouth are facing competition from Lazio in their bid to sign Mauro Zarate. The former Birmingham star is now a free agent after leaving the club at the end of last season. Harry Redknapp's team seemed favourites to secure his services on a season-long loan having agreed terms his parent club Al-Sadd. However, Lazio are thought to be in the chase too, and may offer 20million to sign him permanently. Zarate moved to Birmingham in January this year and scored four goals in fourteen games.

New Blackburn Rovers manager Paul Ince is reported to be lining up a bid for Chelsea keeper Carlo Cudicini. The Italian stopper plays second fiddle to Petr Cech at Stamford Bridge, but when he has stepped in, he has impressed. Ince has so far been coy about bringing new signings into Ewood Park, preferring instead to stablilise the existing team amid rumours Roque Santa Cruz and David Bentley will be leaving. Ince could face some stiff competition for Cudicini, however, as Juventus and Bologna are also thought to be interested.
