Kahn and Vieri - Time to say goodbye?
Two of the saddest things for me last night whilst i watched the 2 UEFA Cup semis was to see 2 once great players going through the motions.
At one time Oliver Kahn could rightly claim to be the world`s best keeper and he was outstanding in Germany's run to the 2002 World Cup Final, but last night he was a shadow of that player. He was playing with a back injury but he still declared himself fit and played.
Anyone who saw his performance last night would know that was the wrong decision he was static on to many occasions and on one free kick in particular he stood so still he could of been doing a mime!! He has decided to retire at the end of this season but in my opinion it is a season to late.
Another player who i feel should quit while he still is remembered kindly is Christian Vieri, he can on last night with 10 minutes to go and proceeded to miss a hatful of chances which in his prime he would have swallowed up. This is a man who has scored 9 goals at World Cup Finals a record comparable with the likes of Gerd Muller and Paolo Rossi but last night he looked slow and lumbering and in one incident i remember he was in the box and turned to shot, now i am not saying he was slow but oil tankers at sea have moved faster!!!! Finally his miserable night was completed with a penalty in the shoot out that would have gone down better at Twickenham
I an fully understand that these great players want to make their careers last as long as possible but when two such great players perform in the way they did in the semi finals of a major competition it is time someone told them the party is over.
