England v Andorra UEFA European Championship Qualifier 5pm, Saturday 2 September 2006 Old Trafford, Manchester United FC Live on The BBC & BBC Radio 5
Steve McClaren has named his 24 man 3 lions England squad to face Andorra and Macedonia in the Euro Championship qualifiers.
England Defense Gary Neville (right back) is out injured. Either Charlton defender Luke Young or Man Utd's Wes Brown are likely to deputise. Rio Ferdinand, John Terry and Ashley Cole are all fit. Goalkeeper Robinson will play also.
England Midfield Joe Cole (left wing) is the main casualty in midfield, Downing provides the cover. Owen Hargreaves, Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard will all play. Gerrard will most likely be at right wing again. Lampard and Hargreaves will play in the centre of the midfield four.
England Attack Andy Johnson has earned a recall. I doubt McClaren will copy Sven by playing Johnson at right wing. If Johnson plays, it will be up front, not out wide. Rooney is still suspended. That means Peter Crouch and Jermaine Defoe will probably start for England up front.
England Squad Goalkeepers ♠ Paul Robinson - Tottenham Hotspur Chris Kirkland - Wigan Athletic (loanee) Ben Foster - Watford (loanee)
Defenders ♠ Wes Brown - Manchester United ♠ Rio Ferdinand - Manchester United ♠ John Terry - Chelsea ♠ Ashley Cole - Arsenal Luke Young - Charlton Athletic Michael Dawson - Tottenham Hotspur Wayne Bridge - Chelsea Phil Neville - Everton
Midfielders ♠ Steven Gerrard - Liverpool ♠ Owen Hargreaves - Bayern Munich ♠ Frank Lampard - Chelsea ♠ Stewart Downing - Middlesbrough Michael Carrick - Manchester United Aaron Lennon - Tottenham Hotspur Shaun Wright-Phillips - Chelsea Jermaine Jenas - Tottenham Hotspur Kieran Richardson - Manchester United
Strikers ♠ Jermaine Defoe - Tottenham Hotspur ♠ Peter Crouch - Liverpool Darren Bent - Charlton Athletic Andrew Johnson - Everton
Today, referees will be deciding whether to stop play or not, for perceived injuries to players on the field of play. Regardless of how serious either side think the injury is.
Gone is the ridiculous rule of football players having to police themselves in the middle of a match.
♠ If a player is injured during open play, the referee will decide stop the match with the whistle if he deems it necissary, otherwise play continues.
The ball was thrown in, Arsenal scored through Marc Overmars to record a 2-1 victory, but Arsene Wenger and David Dein insisted the match be replayed. Such nonsense will stop as of today in the leagues.
The twist in the script is this new rule will not count for international football matches - yet.
England 4 John Terry 14 Frank Lampard 30 Peter Crouch 36,42
Greece 0 Old Trafford Attendance - 45864
So McClaren's new England team trounced the Greek's with apparent ease at Old Trafford. Beckham was not missed it seems. Steven Gerrard played a man-of-the-match performance at right midfield. So much for the drop Lampard, Gerrard must play in the centre brigade. Gerrard is just about the best utility player in the world right now.
England Defence John Terry scored on 14 minutes in his first game as captain. Coral Bookmakers had Terry at only 14/1 to score first, an amazingly short price for a centre back. The bookies must have written the Terry script, because things are going swimmingly for Terry at club and country, without the bookmakers getting their fingers burnt.
The other defenders played well. Goalkeeper Robinson had a little to do, looked good when called upon late on. Rio Ferdinand even came forward more with the ball. It's about time. Cole and Neville were consistent and reliable as usual.
England Midfield The midfield was solid. Hargreaves has turned into England's midfield rock it seems. No suprise really. It's not like the biggest team in Germany (bayern munich), would waste their time playing an English duffer for 3 seasons continuosly in the anchor-man role. Lampard scored, which is what we want. Downing played well at left midfield. I guess Joe Cole is a superior operator overall, but he is not an out-and-out left winger. Downing may play left mid a bit more under McClaren, who brought him through from the youth team to the first team at Middlebrough.
England Strikers Up front, Crouch scored twice. That's 8 goals in the last 9 internatioals for Crouch. Ashton was booked to play, but broke his ankle in training, Ashton will do well to out perform Crouch at the moment, even if fully fit. Defoe played ok, which was nice for the player. I am sure he will show a bit more in future games, if McClaren gives him the chance.
England Blog Comment Overall a good result for McClaren and the England team. Fingers crossed McClaren's footballing pedigree, coming through various clubs and jobs in the game, from player, to coach, to assistant manager under Sir Alex, to Boro manager, to the England manager pinnacle, will serve him and the 3 lions well for years to come. Venables as assistant can't hurt either. I thought he was on the FA's blacklist? I doubt McClaren is a yes man, based upon Venables presence alone.
Steve McClaren has named his first England team 24 hours before the kick-off. Only half the tickets have been sold for the friendly against Moldova at Old Trafford. Let's hope England play well to drum up some interest after the World Cup finals.
England Defense The defense is no surprise. Robinson in goal. It is the same back 4 as Sven's.
England Midfield The midfield has Steven Gerrard at right midfield. Hargreaves and Lampard play centre, Downing on the left wing, as Joe Cole is injured.
England Attack Up front Crouch and Defoe line up. Rooney is injured and new England call up Dean Ashton broke his ankle in training.
England Blog Comment The only real difference is Beckham is dropped. Maybe I have that wrong. Either way - Come On England!

England v Greece International Football Friendly 8.05pm, Wednesday 16 August 2006 Old Trafford, Manchester Live on BBC TV & BBC Radio 5
McClaren Selects Steve McClaren has selected his first ever England squad for the freindly against Greece in 5 days time (aug 16, 805pm)
McClaren wants England to be progressive. Hopefully the 3 lions play decent attacking football in the future under new management, unlike under Sven, who was rather defensive minded.
Steve McClaren considers managing England to be an honour and the pinnacle of his managerial career. He is also English, which should be a pre-requisite for any England team manager. I think all international soccer teams should be managed by someone eligible to play in the team by birth or citizenship.
Come on England!
Dropped England Players The main fit casualty is previous captian David Beckham. Goalkeeper David James is out. Sol Campbell is out.
New England Players Centre back Michael Dawson in. Defender Wes Brown is back. Full back Luke Young recalled. Winger Kieron Richardson back. Shaun Wright-Phillips returns. Striker Defoe is back in. Dean Ashton gets his first call up ever.

Owen Hargreaves was voted England's best player in the 2006 World Cup finals in Germany. I thought he played very well in his proper position. Here is an interview with Hargreaves and the FA.
The England Team captain is John Terry. Steven Gerrard has been named vice-captain.
I am not surprised. John Terry was clear 1/4 favourite in the betting to lead the 3 lions into the European Championship qualifiers.
I am happy Terry has the armband. Gerrard is top captain material too, so it was a toss-up really. Either player would have done the job.
The North v South divide has been mentioned. Terry playing for Chelsea in London. Gerrard up North in Liverpool. I don't think a scouse accent versus a London accent had any bearing whatsoever.
The new England Head Coach also confirmed that Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard will be vice-captain.
England Manager Steve McClaren said "Choosing a captain is one of the most important decisions a coach has to make. I'm certain I've got the right man in John Terry. I'm convinced he will prove to be one of the best captains England has ever had.
John has all the attributes an international captain needs: leadership, authority, courage, ability, tactical awareness and a total refusal to accept second-best. He has been an inspiration for Chelsea and is at his best in adversity.
Over the five years I've been involved with the England coaching set-up I've seen first hand the respect that John has among his fellow players. There are a number of strong leaders in the squad and he will not lack support on and off the pitch.
Steven Gerrard was a strong candidate for the captaincy and he will be my vice-captain. He is an outstanding player and another superb club skipper who also leads by example.
I told Steven when I spoke to him today that I'm sure he will also get the chance to lead his country while I'm Head Coach."
