I am from England and I support the England Team. Why an Englishman would ban the flying of the England cross of St George in England, is a curiosity to me. Especially during the fifa World Cup finals.
The England team defied a gamble on Ecuador by the football betting public, to squeeze through to the last 16 of the fifa World Cup, with a hard fought 1-0 win over Ecuador.
# Beckham Quality A trademark free-kick from the England captain David Beckham seperated the sides. A perfectly struck ball, just inside the post, the Ecuador keeper could do nothing about the goal. Those calling for Beckham to be dropped are almost batting for the other side. Go ask Ecuador or any other team for that matter, if they would prefer to see the 3 lions trot out without Beckham in the team.
# Rooney Class Act Rooney could not have done much more today. Up front on his own, he lasted the full 90 minutes(+3) and had the Ecuador captain Ivan Hurtado stretched from the getgo, right until the final whistle. A quality performance from a world class footballer.
# Carrick Man Of The Match Carrick was arguably the man of the match. Carrick, playing the holding role between the back four and the midfield, was outstanding with his quality passing. Surely the Spurs midfielder Carrick has booked himself a starting spot against the Dutch or the Portuguese in the final 16.
# Ashley Cole Outstanding Ashley Cole had a stormer at left back. Ashley has'nt played that much football this season. He may just be running himself into tip-top form judging by todays performance. We shall see.
England Team Robinson, Hargreaves, Terry, Ferdinand, Ashley Cole, Beckham (Lennon 87), Carrick, Gerrard (Downing 90), Lampard, Joe Cole (Carragher 77), Rooney. Subs Not Used: James, Campbell, Bridge, Carson, Crouch, Jenas, Neville, Walcott. Booked: Terry, Robinson, Carragher. Goals: Beckham 60.
Ecuador Team Mora, De la Cruz, Hurtado, Espinoza, Reasco, Valencia, Edwin Tenorio (Lara 69), Castillo, Mendez, Delgado, Carlos Tenorio (Kaviedes 71). Subs Not Used: Villafuerte, Ambrossi, Ayovi, Benitez, Borja, Guagua, Lanza, Perlaza, Saritama, Urrutia. Booked: Valencia, Carlos Tenorio, De la Cruz.
Att: 52,000. Ref: Frank De Bleeckere (Belgium). Fifa man-of-the-match: John Terry (should be Carrick)
World cup final 16 time. The knockout stages are upon us. Fail to beat Ecuador on sunday and it's the plane home for the England team
Rumour has it, that Carragher will be dropped from the right back spot, to be replaced by Hargreaves. Apparently Carrick may play behind the midfield 4 of Joe Cole, Beckham, Lampard and Gerrard, with Rooney up fronrt on his own. Peter Crouch will be on the bench.
For a staunch 4-4-2 exponent, Sven sure has changed his tune if he lines up in the quarter finals of the "Fifa World Cup of Soccer" with a 4-1-4-1 formation.
Hopefully Lampard and Gerrard will be able to push forward at will when we have the ball in attacking positions, with Carrick playing the holding role in front of the back four.
We shall see - Come on England!

England failed to beat Sweden again, it has only been 38 years since we beat the Swedes. Even taking the lead twice and lastly through an 85th minute Gerrard header was'nt enough to bury the Swedish team tonight.
Anyway, England play Equador in the final 16 of the World Cup finals, which could be worse. If the 3 lions had lost, next would have been the auld enemy Germany. Instead, a draw was enough to top Group B.
So England march on without impressing aside Joe Cole's wonder strike. I contest we played a bit better tonight. The problem is Owen looks crocked with a twisted knee (ligaments), Rio Ferdinand limped off to be replaced by Sol Campbell and of course, Gary Neville is still out with a calf strain.
Aside the 3 goalkeepers, I make that 17 fit players to go into 10 outfield positions. Harry Redknapp would call that down to the bare bones of the squad I guess. With the 17 year old Theo Walcott who has never played premiership football, and Sven not seeming to want to play the boy, England are pretty much down to the last 16 outfield players. Any more injuries and we'll be in trouble. Let's hope Neville and Ferdinand are back soon. I don't hold out much hope for Owen playing again in these World Cup finals.
Come on England!
England and Sweden Teams Sweden: Isaksson, Lucic, Mellberg, Edman, Alexandersson, Linderoth (Andersson 90), Kallstrom, Ljungberg, Jonson (Wilhelmsson 54), Larsson, Allback (Elmander 74). Subs Not Used: Alvbage, Hansson, Ibrahimovic, Nilsson, Rosenberg, Shaaban, Stenman, Anders Svensson, Karl Svensson.
Ex England manager Terry Venables (el tel) has picked his England team to face Sweden on tuesday. Here we go.
Terry Venables England 4-3-3 Team To Play Sweden
Goalkeeper - Paul Robinson, Defence - Jamie Carragher, John Terry, Rio Ferdinand, Ashley Cole Midfield - Steven Gerrard, Michael Carrick, David Beckham, Attackers - Frank Lampard, Wayne Rooney, Joe Cole.
England Blog Comment - Looks more like a fancy 4-5-1 to me, with Lampard and Cole getting forward to supprt the lone striker Rooney.
6'7 Giant Peter Crouch scored in the 82'nd minute via Trinidad with a back post header. Looking at the TV replays, it is clear that Peter Crouch fouled centre back Brent Sancho (6'0) using his dreadlocks, before he headed the Beckham cross past goalie Shaka Hislop.
Crouch grabbed a handful of Sancho's dreadlocks as he jumped. Sancho's head definately jerked backwards violently looking at the tv replays. Crouch definately had a handful of dreadlocks, thereby rendering the defender from challenging him for the header. A clear foul.
Did Peter Crouch Do The Right Thing? Q :: Did Peter Crouch do the right thing in pulling Brent Sancho's Hair to gain an advantage in the air?
A :: Rodney Marsh said - "A definate foul, an outrageous foul, well done Peter!"
England Blog Comment - I have never been one for crying when on the pitch decisions go against England, or when the referee or linesman makes a mistake. I thought Diego Maradona's "hand of god" was quality football at it's worst and best, by a world class operator on fire.
So yes, I agree with Rodney Marsh (site closed for now), well done Peter!
England beat Trinidad 2-0 with a couple of goals in the last 10 minutes to spare the 3 lions blushes.
The game went as expected tactically-wise. England 442 attacking, Trinidad 4141 with 11 men behind the ball. The question was would the English score, or get caught on the break? Gladly England scored twice, albeit late on in the football match.
There will be a lot of talk about formations, substitutes, Rooney, Sven's tactics and so on. The main thing is England are through to the knockout stages of the World Cup finals. That small fact will be lost upon most, but those are romanticist's waffling on about how the beautiful game of soccer should be played.
England meet Trinidad in a very important match for both sides. If England can get past the Trinidad team, the 3 lions will be through to the knockout stages before the Sweden game kicks off.
The odds on Peter Crouch doing the robot goalscoring celebration today are long, I gather Crouch will not be dancing anymore. I still expect Crouch to bag a brace, even though Trinidad centre back Dennis Lawrence stands 6'7 tall against him.
Come on England!

The Trinidad Camp Sure Looks Like A Happy One - but I think on thursday evening when the 3 lions roar, the smile will leave for Tobago.
Shaka Hislop and co will then have a difficult game against the Paraguyans to look forward to, for possible qualification.
Happy Trinidad Camp I've also spent a few hours with Trinidad and Tobago - what a terrifyingly happy camp it is.
Their hotel is beseiged by autograph hunters who stop them as they cycle to nearby practice pitches.
I saw lots of that trademark Dwight Yorke smile as the Soca Warriors were put through their paces.
You could see how much the Trinidad captain is enjoying the build-up to the England game. After playing alongside David Beckham at Manchester United, he's looking forward to facing him this Thursday.
By the way - our Welsh friend Alan Thomas lives in Brazil, has a Brazilian wife and a Brazilian father-in-law who upon meeting Robert said - there are no divorced women in my family, only widows.
England Blog Comment - Sounds to me like our Robert would have to cheer on the Brazilians V Wales, let alone England.
Experiment - This is a global experiment to see if the Wisdom of Crowds can be used to predict the outcome of The World Cup.
Result - On the eve of the tournament, we can reveal that England will reach the World Cup Final. Well, that's if our Wisdom of Fans experiment proves to be correct. We sent out an open invitation to viewers of our 11v11.co.uk web site to give us their prediction for the World Cup. They each had 100 percentage points to be allocated amongst the competing nations as they saw fit.
The Wisdom of Fans works on the theory that groups of random people can provide remarkably accurate information, and usually outperform individual experts.
Percentages - Over 4,000 votes later, the result is that - not too surprisingly - the 2006 World Cup winners are predicted to be Brazil with 32.09% of the aggregate vote. It's England who come in second at 15.79%. The semi-finalists are tipped as Argentina (12.67%) and Germany (11.62%). The other would-be quarter-finalists are a European quartet of Italy (9.67%), France (8.36%), Holland (8.03%) and Spain (6.35%). All 32 nations receive some supports but it's Saudi Arabia who are the rank-outsiders with 1.61%
Results Table by Percentage 32.09% Brazil 15.79% England 12.67% Argentina 11.26% Germany 9.67% Italy 8.36% France 8.03% Holland 6.35% Spain 6.00% Czech Republic 5.80% Portugal 4.30% Croatia 4.24% Ecuador 4.02% United States 3.88% Sweden 3.62% Australia 3.26% Poland 3.23% Ivory Coast 3.22% Korean Republic 3.20% Mexico 3.17% Ghana 3.12% Trinidad & Tobago 3.05% Iran 2.98% Togo 2.97% Japan 2.76% Angola 2.14% Ukraine 2.03% Costa Rica 2.03% Tunisia 1.92% Switzerland 1.87% Serbia & Montenegro 1.79% Paraguay 1.61% Saudi Arabia
Named +Teamgeist, German for "team spirit," the soccer ball features a radical new design that sports just 14 panels - the first departure from the iconic 32-panel ball that's been used in the World Cup for the past 36 years.
Adidas, the new ball's designer, touts it as the most technologically advanced?and roundest?soccer ball ever made.
Tournament officials say the ball will lead to more goals, providing extra excitement for the World Cup's billions of spectators.
Some star players have endorsed the new design, including England's captain, David Beckham, known for his trademark swerving shots when shooting a goal.
"It goes where you want it to go, and that's important," the Adidas-sponsored player said in a press release.
But some players and sports scientists aren't so sure about how the new ball is going to perform.
Critics say the ball is too light and aerodynamic, and it may behave unpredictably and create problems for goalkeepers.
Goalkeeper Concerns About New World Cup Ball
The most common soccer ball design originated by an Adidas model called Telstar?was introduced at the 1970 World Cup in Mexico. It is made up of 20 white hexagons and 12 black pentagons stitched together into a sphere.
As well as using fewer panels, Adidas dispensed with any stitching for +Teamgeist, instead using a heating and gluing process to create a watertight seal.
The manufacturer says this new feature gives the ball the same feel whatever the playing conditions, rain or shine.
Adidas On Their New Ball Adidas says +Teamgeist is up to three times more accurate than previous soccer balls and that the ball's qualities remain identical with every shot.
Against Paraguay, the Mexican referee would'nt allow players from either team to take on board fluids during natural breaks in play, in temperatures reaching the 90's.
What's all that about?
FA Contacts FIFA Regarding Water Breaks -
Saturday's game was played in sweltering temperatures and players were constantly coming to the touchline for drinks during stoppages in play.
The FA has said it will contact FIFA in a bid to ensure sufficient water breaks are allowed during matches.
The squad got through three times more fluids than normal during the Paraguay match and everyone who played lost weight.
But the team will hope for a cooler time against Trinidad and Tobago on Thursday, which is a tea-time kick off.
Swastika Arrests - The fans, aged 21 and 24 and from Bolton, Greater Manchester, were held at the Waldstadion as England beat Paraguay 1-0.
Both men, who had daubed the symbols on their bare torsos, were released after paying a surety and allowed to remain in the country but may be prosecuted later.
Robert Schaefer, the operational commander of German police in Frankfurt, said they were among a total of 13 England fans arrested in the city on Saturday. None remain in custody.
England Blog Comment - Swastika drawn on the backside is not such a good idea, especially as the World Cup is in Germany. I guess though, that was the point. I am surprised the Germans never sent the 2 men back to Bolton.
Funnily enough, it was the England manager's other half Nancy Dell'Olio who explained the situation.
"It is essential to be loved and to make love. Everyone might think that is sex, but I think it can be much more romantic than that. It is much better if it is evolved. Everyone agrees there is nothing better in life, it's the only thing that makes the world go round right?"
Beckham's cross swung in from a free-kick swung the match in England's favour to the tune of 1 goal to nil. An excellent result for the 3 lions. Not massively impressive performance-wise, but all considered, not describable as a bad show.
1st Half (England 1 - Paraguay 0) The first half was all England pressing the play, thereby keeping the Paraguay players busy with their defensive duties. I think the Paraguayans defended reasonably well after a shaky looking first 10 minutes. The Paraguayan 1'st choice keeper Villar had to be replaced by stopper Bobadilla on 6 minutes.
Full Time - (England 1 Paraguay 0) The heat told on the England players in the second half. The Paraguayans got stronger and stronger throughout the game, understandably unaffected by the high temperature(90's). The Mexican referee would'nt allow water to be taken on board during natural breaks in play, which was rather odd considering.
Michael Owen was replaced after 55 minutes by Sven, bringing on Downing. England went to a 4-4-1-1 formation, Joe Cole in behind Crouch, with Downing going left midfield. Joe Cole was dangerous for a bit, but the Paraguayans called his number pretty quickly.
Sven took off Joe Cole with about 10 to go and brought on Hargreaves to protect the back 4. The 4-5-1 formation did'nt work so well to the naked eye, but the Paraguayans never got the equaliser, which is all that matters.
England Blog Comment :: Hopefully the temperature in Germany will drop a few degrees over the next few days and the England players can keep up the fast paced football for atleast 70 minutes or so, rather than the 45 seen in this match.
All in all a good performance and an even better result for the England team.
♠ England fans - If you're happy and you know it clap your hands.

Paraguay - Paraguay are a strong South American outfit. The weather in Germany at the moment is very hot, which is a plus for the Paraguayans and their star striker Santa Cruz who plays for Bayern Munich is passed fit. No pushovers.
