Irish Bookie Price Error Situation
An Irish punter and Harrington's Bookmakers are at odds over a price error shown on the betting shop screen. The in-shop price monitor showed 10/11, whereas the correct price should have shown 4/6.
€220 was bet by Pat McDonnell from Bagenalstown. The horse won and should have returned him €420 at the taken odds of 10/11. The Harrington Bookmakers on Dublin Street in Carlow only offered Pat the 4/6 odds total, ie €366, upon production of the winning betting slip, a difference of €54.
Gamblog Comment :: The bookies have quoted technical error. Faulty transmission of correct odds to the betting shop, sourced from London apparently. Harrington's Bookmakers are clearly within their rights to withhold the €54.
I would pay the gambler if I ran Harrington's, to keep the local punter(s) happy and confident in the sincerity of the firm. Big bets will not be allowed until the racing room, (or in Harrington's case the owner) has been alerted and a decision is made regarding the striking of any given large wager. It's not like a precedent will be set, that will close the betting operation upon the next palpable error.
