England have lost in the World Cup finals after a penalty shootout defeat at the hands of Portugal. Big Phil Scolari certainly is Sven Goran Eriksson's bogeyman.
Portugal were under strength and looked ready to be put to the sword for the first 10 minutes of the football match. The rest of the first half England looked jaded. Not sure why.
The second half was looking like it would be another unmemorable half. That is until Wayne Rooney got sent off for pushing his Man Utd team-mate Ronaldo in the 62nd minute. Sven sacrificed Joe Cole from left midfield and stuck Peter Crouch up front to plow the lone furrow. Crouch was shockingly impressive. The Portuguese defenders were baffled by his size I think.
Backs to the wall, England held out for a 0-0 draw until the 90th minute. I say held out, the 10 man 3 lions looked the more likely to score of the 2 teams. Peter Crouch looked in on goal with 10 to go, but Carvallo stole in to clear. John Terry nearly scored in the last minute too, that would have been quite a goal.
The extra time was interesting seeing that England seemed to take the bull by the horns again and were unlucky not to win the football match. In the end, 0-0 it was. Penaties ensued.
I have no intention of going over the penalty shootout any more than to say, England lost again in another International soccer tournament from 12 yards out.
