England captain
David Beckham has resigned the captaincy. Becks was understandably emotional as he made the announcement at an England press conference. Beckham will still play for the team under the new 3 lions manager Steve McClaren.
♠ Did you know it was England caretaker manager Peter Taylor who first gave Beckham the captains armband in November 2000?
♠ Beckham up to today, has played 94 times for England. 58 of those appearances were as the captain. A boyhood dream of Beckham's.
Beckham On Resigning The Captaincy Armband
"I feel the time is right to pass on the armband. As we enter a new era under Steve McClaren, it has been an honor and a privilege to have captained our country and I want to stress that I wish to continue to play for England. I look forward to helping both the new captain and Steve McClaren in any way I can."
England Blog Comment - I think Chelsea centre back John Terry should be the new England captain.
My guess is David Beckham will actually play better for England without the armband. Becks may be the most famous footballer in the international soccer world, but I always figured he was somewhat shackled by the responsibility that comes with the England captaincy. He is not the loudest on the pitch and plays most of his football wide right.
I prefer the Tony Adams type of captain personally. Big, loud, influential and a natural organiser. The man to do that job, for me, is John Terry.

He did the right thing, but I still felt sad for him. I'd go with Gerard.

im sorry for him. worst still, he can't even play for england anymore. McClaren has made a wrong decision of omitting beckham from the england team. He'll regret for it. Beckham rockss!!
