£25,000 left the bookies satchels, via the 7/1 odds on offer for the Bingo Caller Of The Year(pdf file) market.
Countrywide, the bingo gambling syndicate bet the maximum stake of 25 pounds on the 7/1 shot Karl Seth (38). The bingo punters co-ordinated the gamble, so as not to alert the bookies, thereby not allowing the bookies time to drop the price or remove the bingo callers market alltogether.
To win 25k, the bingo betting crew must have layed out approximately £3500 or so, which would involve about 140 seperate wagers. Clearly, to lay so many bets without the punt being noticed, the bingo gang will have had to be quick and very co-ordinated.
I can see the old girls now, flying around the city centres with their blue rinses glinting in the sun, placing wager after wager. Of course, the odds are there were no grannies involved in the betting coup atall. The thought still makes me laugh though.
National Final - weekend of 26/27 November 2005
The six National Finalists are invited to London, with their partners, as guests of the NBGA, for the final judging weekend. They attend a welcoming dinner with the judges so that everyone can get to know each other. After breakfast the next morning, they travel to the National Final venue, where the final judging will begin in front of a bingo playing audience of around 800 to 1,000 regular players. This year the National Final will be held at the Mecca Bingo Club in Catford, London SE6.
The finalists are encouraged to bring coach-loads of supporters, some of whom will have travelled hundreds of miles to support their bingo caller at the National Final. The supporters are fiercely proud of their callers success, and usually come prepared with banners, pom-poms and streamers to welcome their favourites on-stage. The judging procedure follows a similar format to the regional finals, and London media are invited to cover the event.
The winner is presented with The Golden Microphone trophy. He/she also receives a prize of week long holiday for two, in Los Angels and Las Vegas, with £500 spending money, plus the opportunity to call bingo at one of the large Las Vegas casinos. The winner is also trained as a media spokesperson and becomes an ambassador for the bingo industry throughout his/her year of office.
