After Katrina hurricane struck, the casinos in the affected area were lucky not to get washed away. Some did. A lot of money must have gone missing. $68 million has been found by authorities.
Sgt. Sidney Andrews: Centerville Police >>
We were patrolling the streets one morning and saw some armored trucks. They flagged us down. So we went to see what was going on. They had some money in the bank, a large amount of money in the bank. How much? 68 million. 68million? We were nervous.
These officers passed by the loot for three days not knowing what it was.
Det. Bill Lavender: Byron Police >>
That particular incident was Casino money in a bank and they wanted us to secure the area until they could get it all out. It was that building right there and it doesn't even look like a bank. So you were walking by all that money and didn't even know? Didn't even know it.
Det. Bill Lavender: Byron Police >>
Casinos were all washed ashore during the storm and all the money blew out of the casinos and onto the beach. They've found large quantities of money in boxes of cash washed up on the beach.
They turned it all back in, just part of their job to help local police keep order in downtown Gulfport.
Gamblog Comment >> I think the looters would have rathered take the $68million, rather than televisions and a few rolex watches. Sadly, Hurricane Rita is moving toward the same area of the Gulf Coast.
