Sounds reasonable, does'nt it? Newcastle are a big club.
To me though Michael Owen's lack of form is due to being overplayed as a youth and has never been allowed to rest. Constantly being rushed back into the first team from the age of 6 is going to be costly.
The only cure for being overplayed is a rest. Owen has had that at Real Madrid for a little while and it is no surprise to me he has hit a bit of form for England.
Michael Owen just looked sharper and more like the quality youth that came through at 18 and scared top footballers with his pace.
Azerbaijan - (0) England - (1) (Owen 22) Attendance 15'000
England stay top of the World Cup qualifying group 6 after a reasonable 1-0 victory away to Azerbaijan
Jermaine Jenas started in place of the suspended and injured England captain David Beckham and Owen took the armband.
Ashley Cole set up the winner, a downward header from the deputising captain Michael Owen. Owen came with a nicely timed run from deep and scored well.
The blustery conditions in Baku made for a scrappy kind of game all considered. However, 3 points is 3 points and I would'nt have thought playing football in the freezing cold, wind blowing up a gale and not far enough off of the Northern-eastern border of Iran would be condusive to free flowing football.
Come on England!
England Team Paul Robinson, Gary Neville, Ashley Cole, Nicky Butt, Rio Ferdinand, Sol Campbell, Jermaine Jenas (Shaun Wright-Phillips, 72), Frank Lampard, Wayne Rooney (Joe Cole, 85), Michael Owen (c), Jermain Defoe (Alan Smith, 55). Subs: Ledley King, David James, John Terry, Owen Hargreaves.

David Beckham Admits to Getting A Yellow On Purpose And Now The Knives Are Really Out For Beckham
Look, David Beckham got himself booked on purpose. Big deal.
The press and the radio have gone apeshit over the booking. I am talking the English Press here. It's a bit like playing away, even when you are at home, when your own people draw the knives regardless of whether it ends up cutting your nose to spite your face.
The ref has had a pop, Sepp Blatter is on the warpath and even Goeff Hurst has gone ballistic talking of stuff like "Beckham should be stripped of captaincy" and "in his day" and "honour" aaaand bogie men. By the way, Geoff Hurst scored a goal purposely with his hand against Sunderland once, it was a great finish, an honour to see.
Geoff - Do Back off. Maybe that shoud read Beck off, or how about Buck?
The pressure on David Beckham's position as England captain increased today after he was criticised by the referee he controversially conned into showing him a yellow card against Wales last Saturday
Fifa president Sepp Blatter has joined the criticism of David Beckham following the England captain's admission that he deliberately got himself booked against Wales.
Legend Hurst Unimpressed By Becks
Sir Geoff Hurst, the man who attained football immortality by scoring a hat-trick in the 1966 World Cup final, said David Beckham had brought England into "disrepute" by deliberately getting himself booked against Wales so he would be suspended against Azerbaijan on Wednesday - knowing he was already out injured. Hurst said: "I would argue that it brings the country into disrepute.
"I can't possibly imagine that happening in our time - I come from a different planet when it comes to how I feel about that."
Fifa president Sepp Blatter has joined the criticism of David Beckham over his deliberate booking against Wales. Blatter, in Baku for England's World Cup qualifier against Azerbaijan, said: "It's disappointing.
"It is not the behaviour that befits an ambassador of football and fair play. Beckham is a role model.
"I will be having a word with Geoff Thompson (the FA chairman) about the situation while I am in Baku. After that it is not up to Fifa."
England's 1966 World Cup hero Geoff Hurst has accused David Beckham of tarnishing the country's reputation for fair play by admitting that he deliberately fouled an opponent to earn a convenient yellow card in last week's World Cup qualifier against Wales.
They symbolise two very different eras of English football, and yesterday the philosophies of David Beckham and Sir Geoff Hurst clashed in spectacular fashion when the 1966 World Cup winner demanded that the midfielder should lose his captaincy for intentionally earning a booking against Wales on Saturday.
England Under-21's ended their 100% record in Azerbaijan as they were held 0-0 by their Group 6 Azeri rivals.
Peter Taylor's side just couldn't break down the Azeris, despite coming close on a number of occasions.
With the game in injury time, England had their best chance of the match, but were denied twice when first Stead hit the bar, then Johnson saw his effort cleared from the line.
At the final whistle, the home side celebrated as they collected their first valuable point. For Peter Taylor's side, they remain top of the group, but will see it as two points lost, rather than one point gained.
England U 21 Team Scott Carson, Nicky Hunt, Danny Harding, Glen Johnson, Calum Davenport (Matt Kilgallon), Gary O'Neill (c) (Stewart Downing), Jermaine Pennant, James Milner, Jonathan Stead, Nigel Reo-Coker, Peter Whittingham
Sol Campbell and Gary Neville are solid and agressive out and out defenders. Ashley Cole is good going forward and Rio Ferdinand is a decent ball playing centre back who can actually defend. Yip, they can play ball for sure.
For England's sake decent back up is helpful too.
Left back - I think Wayne Bridge is a decent enough young player to cover Ashley Cole. Centre back - John Terry and Ledley King are top players. Ledley King can even pass properly and does not look out of place playing the ball winners role in midfield. Right back - The under rated/over rated Womble Phil Neville is a great replacement for his brother Neville and the younster at Chelsea Johnson is an animal of a player. A highly outstanding young right full back who will come through with a wallop one day.
The best defence in the World? I think we are pushing the defence of the Argentina football team very hard, very hard indeed.
Jermaine Jenas may start in David Beckham's role as a straight replacement. To be honest I have never been able to work out if Jermaine Jenas should play central midfield or right midfield. I guess then Sven choosing to play Jenas in the centre/right midfield slot makes sense. Well, atleast to me anyway.
Jermaine Jenas became the surprise favourite last night to replace David Beckham on the right side of England's three-man midfield for their tricky World Cup qualifier against Azerbaijan.
While Sven-Goran Eriksson has yet to make a final decision, Jenas now looks like he could get a start ahead of the more experienced Owen Hargreaves in what could prove an uncharacteristic gamble by the England coach.
The Newcastle United midfielder played in the right-midfield position for almost an hour in a practice match during England's training session at the Tofik Bakhramov Stadium in Baku last night. Jenas, 21, was a member of the Euro 2004 squad but was never selected during the tournament.
Quintain Estates and U.S. casino firm Caesars Entertainment have formed a joint venture to turn the area around Wembley Stadium into a $600 million (335 million pounds) leisure and gambling resort.
The 50-50 joint venture, Caesars' first foray into the European casino market, would include a 400-room luxury hotel, conference facilities, a casino, shops, restaurants and bars, Quintain Estates said on Tuesday. 'Wembley promises to become one of Europe's top new leisure destinations,'
Caesars Chief Executive Wallace Barr said in a statement. 'With that in mind, Wembley is a natural location for our first European casino project ... Wembley is a name known around the world and is synonymous with the best in entertainment.'
The plan to transform the 650,000 square foot space around England's redeveloped national stadium. It includes revamping the Wembley Arena music venue as well as the construction of Britain's biggest cinema complex, Caesars said. Last month, the government gave Quintain approval to redevelop the land by the stadium, the site of England's World Cup victory in 1966 which is being rebuilt. Quintain said at that time it expected to start building by the end of the year and planned for the first new areas of public space to be ready in time for the reopening of the stadium in 2006.
The project is still subject to planning approval and reform of Britain's gambling laws, which are expected to be overhauled in a new Act that should begin its passage through parliament later this year"
Will David Beckham be Charged by Fifa for purposely getting booked?
David Beckham has admitted that "he got booked on purpose" against Wales. Apparently Becks knew he had done his ribs and went out purposely to get booked, so the yellow card he was carrying would mean nothing. Of course he knew he was injured and figured he would never be fit for the Azerbaijan game 3 days later.
Now I think David Beckham used intelligence and did the right thing getting booked on purpose. What on earth posessed Beck's to admit it though, is beyond me.
Will Fifa charge Beckham with bringing the game into disrepute? Will Fifa charge Beckham with un-sportsman-like conduct?
I think they will actually and will probably do so with glee. The F.A would probably love to charge Beckham too. However, the F.A have no chairman at the moment and they'll not want to tackle the England captain, or the England team right now. The England players have been pretty outspoken and/or tetchy lately and with the Faria Alam thing still in the memory, the F.A will be lieing low.
Furthermore it's about time the English players started playing the game. Foreign teams employ spitting and cynical diving, harassment of referee's and yellow card waving antics all the time. There is no need for all of that, but I do think a bit of brains comes in handy out there and it's nice to see Beckham thinking laterally.
Is Ashley Cole Really The Best Left Back In The Whole World?
Sven Goran Eriksson said after the Wales game, "Ashley Cole is Class". I can agree with that, Ashley Cole certainly is a class left full back.
However, there is some talk in the media and people on the radio saying "Ashley Cole is the best left back in the World"
England Blog Comment :: I am of the opinion Ashley Cole has reached a high level of form, but am refusing to believe Cole is the best out and out left full back in the whole of the footballing world.
I do though, struggle to name a better left back at the moment. Roberto Carlos has the name, but does he have the performance level to outplay Cole? I think not.
English football fans will be expecting an easy win against Azerbaijan in our round 6 Fifa world cup 2006 qualifier to be played on the 13th of October (wednesday) in the Tofig Bakhramov Stadium in Baku Azerbaijan.
Much ado about who will replace the injured and suspended Beckham.
(1) Will it be Wright Phillips as a straight replacement? (2) Will it be Ledley King at left-back with Ashley Cole at left midfield in a 4-4-2 formation. Hargreaves on the right and Defoe dropping to the bench? (3) Will Joe Cole come into the midfield slot left by Beckham's outage? (4) Hargreaves as a straight replacement for Beckham?
Who knows? I gather Sven will not play with 3 strikers and Wright Phillips as a replacement for Beckham because I doubt if Sven will drop Defoe. I don't think he'll put Joe Cole in to replace Beckham. I don't reckon he'll play Ledley King at left back either. In the end there's Hargreaves to play in the centre as a replacement for Beckham. I think that's what Sven will go for.
Did you know that the Russian linesman who gave England "that goal" in the 66 World Cup Final was from Azerbaijan. Tofik Bakhramov was his name and the stadium the match will be played in is named the Tofig Bakhramov Stadium after the great man.
England V Azerbaijan Betting - Match Odds and Prices
England play Azerbaijan on Wednesday (13th October 2004) at the Bakhramov Stadium. The best price I can find is with Bet 365.com at odds of 1-6. This is a match pro punters will be lumping on at because England should probably be nearer the 1-8 - 1-9 odds mark. I doubt if the odds of 1-6 will last long.
England Match Odds and Betting are as follows.
Bet 365 Match Odds [ bet ] Azerbaijan - (14-1) [ bet ] Drawn Match - (11-2) [ bet ] England - (1-6)
Sporting Bet Match Odds [ bet ] Azerbaijan - (16-1) [ bet ] Drawn Match - (11-2) [ bet ] England - (1-8)
Other Match Odds [ bet ] England to be winning at half time and full time is 2-5 with Bet 365.com [ bet ] England to win 4-0 is a best priced 13-2 with Bet 365.com [ bet ] England Will Score First Right? Michael Owen is a best priced 7-2 to score the first match goal with Sporting Bet.com [ bet ] England to be winning at half time. - Sporting Bet.com go a top price of odds of 2-7
If you must bet to keep an extra interest in the match I think the 2-7 with Sporting Bet.com for England to be winning at half time looks the most interesting. Those taking that price will most llkely rather go for England at odds of 2-5 to be winning at half time and full time with Bet 365.com
England - 2 (Lampard 3) (Owen is claiming the deflected goal) (Beckham 76) Wales - 0 Attendance - Att 65'224 Referee - Terje Hauge (Norway)
Sven's England Team beat Wales 2-0 in a pretty one sided game. A deflected goal from Frank Lampard that Michael Owen is claiming put England in the driving seat after 3 minutes and from there on in England looked in full control, but certainly not on fire.
David Beckham put away a top quality free kick with 15 minutes to go to pretty much seal the match and helped send England on their way to to the World Cup Final qualification.
Beckham got injured and booked playing silly buggers with Ben Thatcher and will miss the next game in Azerbaijan as a result. Some in the media are asking if Beckham fancied the away trip to Azerbaijan. I personally think that's unfair and pure speculation.
A good result in our next away game in Azerbaijan will set us right on track because our next 2 games to follow are both home ties against Northern Ireland and Azerbaijan respectively.
England Team Robinson, Gary Neville, Campbell, Ferdinand, Ashley Cole, Beckham (Hargreaves 85), Lampard, Butt, Rooney (King 86), Defoe (Smith 70), Owen. Subs Not Used: James, Terry, Joe Cole, Wright-Phillips. Booked: Beckham.
Sven Goran Eriksson has named his England team starting 11 for the match against Wales at 3pm.
David Beckham is the captain and these tense games are what he needs to get him back to his previous form for Man Utd. I am hoping for a big game against the Welsh from Becks.
Defoe partners Owen up front with Rooney playing in behind as the support man. Butt, Beckham and Lampard make up the rest of the midfield. Cole, Campbell, Rio Ferdinand and Gary Neville play as a back 4 and Robinson retains his place in goal.
England Team Starting 11 Goalkeeper - Paul Robinson
Left Back - Ashley Cole Right Back - Phil Neville Centre Back - Sol Campbell Centre Back - Rio Ferdinand

1 minutes silence will be honoured by everyone at the ground in remembrance of Ken Bigley. I expect to be able to hear a pin drop.
England U 21's - [ 2 ] (Milner 46)
(Bent 73)
Wales U 21's - [ 0 ]
England's super-sub Darren Bent struck again to beat Wales at Ewood Park - and take his incredible record to seven goals in only nine games for the Under-21s.
Bent ensured England stay top of their UEFA Under-21 Championship qualifying group with nine points from three games after he added to James Milner's 46th minute opener by heading home a Stewart Downing free-kick.
It means the Ipswich youngster has now scored five goals for the Under-21s in four games this season - and all as a substitute!
Newcastle's James Milner was given a new central midfield role by manager Peter Taylor, and responded with a performance of real maturity and creativity.
The 2-0 scoreline now puts England in a commanding position at the top of Group 6.
England Carson Johnson (Taylor, 85), Hunt, Davenport, Harding, Pennant (Whittingham, 75), Milner, O'Neil, Downing, Cole (Bent, 19), Stead.
Subs not used: Kilgallon, Lonergan, Baines, Hinshelwood.
Jermaine Defoe keeps hid place in the England side and will get another start after scoring in his last start against Poland.
Listening to the reports on the radio and scanning the papers this morning the news is Sven Goran Eriksson will play Defoe, Owen and Rooney as a support man.
Jermaine Defoe and Michael Owen will partner up front and Wayne Rooney will play in behind them as the support man at the point of a 442 diamond formation.
Rooney can certainly play the support man role by the looks of things and can get forward to over-ride the lack of size and physical presence a partnership of Owen and Defoe obviously lacks. I think I recall Sven playing Rooney as a support man before.
Lampard, Butt and Beckham will make up the other 3 midfielders to go with Rooney. Beckham right of centre, Lampard left of centre and Nicky Butt as the ballwinner in the centre protecting the defence and midfield.
Ashley Cole, Sol Campbell, Rio Ferdinand and Gary Neville will most likely start in defence, from left to right respectively. Paul Robinson looks a certainty to start in goal for the second game running as David James is reportedly struggling for fitness.

England U21's take on the Welsh tomorrow night in a group 6 qualifier and are needing the win after 2 away defeats on the bounce. A home defeat would be disastrous for England U21 manager Peter Taylors young charges.
It's about time England won something to replace the big talk and mainstream media hype. That starts from the bottom upward.
Peter Taylor is optomistic England can perform well and starts with the slightly out of form Jonathan Stead. Taylor said of Stead
"Jonathan Stead will play, I've been very impressed with Jonathan".
"He's been disappointing in front of goal, that's the only thing, but that's happened for Blackburn and the Under-21's".
"I think the only thing missing from his game is a goal and a bit more confidence when he does score - I'm hopeful he can play on his home ground and get us a goal.
