Olympic Swimming | Michael Phelps To Break Mark Spitz Record?

Chris's Sports Blog begs the question of whether Star American Swimmer Michael Phelps Will Fail in his bid to break Mark Spitz's Olympic Swimming Record of 7 Gold Medals In A Single Olympic Games

Chris's Sport Blog says ::

With the media focused on Phelps' attempt to break (or tie) Mark Spitz's record of seven gold medals in a single Olympics, anything less than those seven golds will be a disappointment.

But can five gold and three silver medals really be a letdown?

It will be for NBC, who will make Phelps the showcase of their first week of Olympic coverage. The peacock network has been breathlessly hyping Phelps' quest for seven golds for the past two years and will certainly be doing much of the same during their primetime coverage beginning this weekend.

Speedo, one of Phelps' sponsors, also has a lot to lose if he should fall short. The swimming apparel giant has promised Phelps a $1 million bonus if he ties or beats Spitz's mark. The publicity Speedo will earn for doling out the bonus will far outweigh what they pay to Phelps.
Michael Phelps certainly is one helluva swimmer and The Americans are certainly expecting a lot of the guy. It will be interesting to watch to see if Michael can indeed win all those medals in several different swimming events.
Keep your eye out for him UK readers, Michael Phelps is bordering on a becoming a swimming phenomenon. I hope he does it, it will be Olympic history in the making.
